Hypothetical Pedal Placement

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey fellas,

I'm looking to upgrade from a multi to a strictly clean board within the next few months.

This is the hypothetical signal path:

Me-->Strings-->Pickups-->10-Channel Peavey USB Mixer-->Tech 21 VT Bass-->Demeter Compulator-->Xotic Bass RC Booster-->Aphex 1402 Bass Xciter-->Sonic Research Turbo Tuner ST-200-->ISP Decimator-->Power Amp-->Cab

How would you arrange the pedals?

Personally, I'd put the compressor first, VT next, Decimator last, tuner somewhere out of the signal chain (if your amp has a tuner out, that's where I'd run it) and I wouldn't bother with the rest of that stuff at all. I think the Compulator would do much of the job of the booster (unless of course you're just using it as an occasional boost rather than an always-on boost, in which case I'd probably put it in front of the VT and after the Compulator), and the Xciter is just one of those pedals that I find to be useless.

But the big question is why do you need a 10 ch. mixer? Are you planning on using 10 basses?

I have no idea why you need a 10 channel mixer either, or what you use it for, but I would run things very similar to Jimmy.

Bass -> tuner (if you don't have a tuner loop, if you do, run it there) -> Compulator -> RC Booster -> VT Bass -> Decimator -> Bass Xciter (to use the DI, honestly I've never used a Bass Xciter, and have never had the need for one of these, or a "sonic maximizer" whatever that means... snake oil I say!) -> Power amp (do you mean bass amplifier? Or just a PA power amp?) -> taxi (cab )

Are the 10 channel mixer and power amp a PA that you're using for a bass rig? If so, and if you're not using the other 9 channels you may want to try using the VT as your pre instead of the mixer. Then again, the mixer may give you an effects loop that could be useful for blending and/or a tuner out. In general though, I would suggest that you keep it as simple as possible especially in a band context.

For clarification:

Jimmy, yes, I do plan to use the boost for the occasional solo in my group.

I'm running the mixer for switching ease since I'll be using a Bongo and an EUB, so I don't have to mess with levels when I switch, just set, mute the other channel and play.

I like this particular mixer's features better than its smaller brothers, and its small enough to be taken to the gig. Also, it's really just six channels with two stereo channels, so its not quite as big as you might think. Furthermore, I can use it for recording a few different instruments to my computer, so in this way it serves more than one purpose.

To Mutt: I wasn't planning to use the DI on the Aphex, I've heard its not very good, so I'll be getting a Radial JDI to put after the Decimator.

And yes, I mean PA power amp for when I'm using my own rig. The mixer will run as my preamp, VT for emulation (when desired)-->Pedals-->Power Amp-->Cab. Or Mixer-->Compulator-->VT Bass-->Pedals-->JDI for playing straight to house, and the thru output + DI on the JDI when running to both.

The Sonic Maximizer really isn't anything more than a scooping pedal. It is a very fancy name for a 2 band boost-only EQ. The Aphex is a lot different in design, do some reading here when you have a moment: http://aphex.com/pdf/204/Aphex_204_user_man.pdf

To Jimmy, I'll do some further looking into the Aphex, but it's one of the more disposable pedals in consideration.

Since I don't have a tuner out and I'm not using any pedals that would particularly confuse the tuner, I'll run that right before the Decimator so that I can eliminate any signal whatsoever when tuning.

Thanks for the advice everyone, more is welcome of course.

-Sean
