Hey all,
I'm new here and I'd like to ask you guys for some help in replicating a tone. I know i sound like every other idiot on the corner but I am a red hot chili peppers fan, and i really like the crunchy (not sure how to describe) tone he gets in his songs. by crunchy i mean RHCP - Johnny, Kick A Hole In The Sky [Bass Cover with TABS] - YouTube from around 1:40. I've seen and heard a lot of people get this tone but is there some pedal out there that gets this tone, or is this more of an instrument issue? Im kind of a noob and have a crappy amp, but i have a nice american standard jazz bass i managed to get for fairly cheap. Is it possible to get this kind of tone with a jazz bass? any input is appreciated. please help this noob become a not noob, gracias

dude....90% of someone s tone is in the FINGERS....if any schmuck walking around
with a fender jazz epoxy coated bass and an acoustic amp could sound like jaco pastorious, then it would suck, right?
know this>flea is an agressive player,he is hitting the strings way too hard(like myself btw),so i am guessing that a lot of <roughness> in his sound comes from his fingers..
that said,i will listen to this particular song and give you more info!

heh...

i do agree that me and anyone else playing the same bass and rig will sound different. but he's asking about fleas tone. dont say "fleas fingers." i'd say pickup style and placement has far more of an effect on the final result than fingers.

im not too sure about the tone in question, but for early flea, a stingray with a GK amp will usually do it "good enough" for most folks.

No, there's definitely some sort of "synthy" wah going on there or something.

I don't know what the heck it is, but he's definitely got some sort of an effect he found. There are tons of effects out there like it. You could probably plug in to a bass pod or something like that, and just start dialing around and find something like it.
