Question I have enough money for ONE new pedal. Halp?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been saving up (I'm a high-school student), and recently ordered a Jaguar bass (A red one, I'm replacing the white fretboard with a black one). I currently have enough money for one high end, single effect pedal.

At the moment, I have: A crappy Zoom Multi-FX, and a BOSS MT-2 Distortion which is good for some things but not all.

I'm thinking of getting either: A Big Muff, an RC-2, some kind of delay pedal (Don't know anything about those, advice would be appreciated), or a Super-Chorus.

Any suggestions? It would be very much appreciated.

Try out the EHX Bass Big Muff. Cheap and it's gotten good reviews by fellow TB'ers!

I'm confused, are you changing from a maple to a rosewood/ebony fretboard or are you changing the pickguard?

Hi, first post here.
If you want sample-looping like the RC-2 and delay, the Boss DD-7 and the Digitech Hardwire DL-8 has both. Also, buy used if you can.

Depends on your style of music...you already have the dirt aspect covered, although the Boss ODB-3 is made specially for basses.... But there's only one real rules for gear junkies: if it works for you, then it works !

Delay ? might not be often used, but I admit it's a pretty cool sound. Flanger ? pretty much the same, I use mine often ... a good Compressor, especially if you're into slap

Chorus: always adds color and depth to the bass sound and you don't have to use a lot of it to make a difference in your sound, if you're looking for ONE pedal, I'd go that way. Anywho, that's what I did and mine is pretty much on...

Octaver: if you're into metal, I'd go for that one instead of the chorus

Hope this helps :-)

I know you were aiming more for a delay or destortion, however have a look a the nano bass balls, its a twin envelope filter, has a really awesome sound and theres a destortion switch if you still want to add some crunch to your sound....just a suggestion

Second that motion...just got the bassballs last week and it's a very potent pedal for an (official) one-knob thing....

On the delay (I'm a big delay lover):

EHX Memory Boy.
The Deluxe Memory Man was and still is one of the most awesome analog delays I heard. But the Memory Boy is much cheaper. (So you can purchase another pedal maybe.)

I like it with the vibrato on the delayed signal. It really ads a nice dimension to your sound.

Why?

Popular use: chorus is more likely to be used in metal than an octaver.

But, effects use isn't restricted to a certain genre.

Octaver is nice, especially if you are after a more synthy tones. Can work in metal.
But so can chorus.

Now I play metal and I don't like chorus (on bass, love it on guitar).

It's all very personal. If I can only have one pedal it would be a delay.

Second would be my beloved EHX (big) POG for organ simulation.

Look on the classifieds here and get more bang for your buck!

Are you playing alone or with a band? What kind of music?

I agree, it's very personnal. An octave will give a bit more more bottom which is good when you like the bass to OOOMMMMPHHHH in your gut and you don't like playing 5-stringers...

Again, not much is needed to go a long way

If you like your current distortion, then go for a chorus or flanger. I personally would go flang because you can put it in almost anywhere, depending on how severe a flang you use. Just picked up the bf-2b on eBay for $30 and am in love. Also have a red witch empress chorus that is just sick

I reckon...and I think people will go mad at me for this - you should buy a couple of the Behringer stomps

You'll be able to get 2 or 3 nice boss pedal clones for the price of a single high-end pedal...just go to the shop and try out everything they've got, and if you like a Behringer then A B it with a high end effect then ask yourself "is it REALLY worth that extra £100 for the metal-cased one?"

Spoken like a true Englishman . I say ignore this advice. If you don't like behringer effects you'll have wasted your money. In my opinion, it's better to get one good quality effect that you really like then several cheap ones that are mediocre.

As to the two posts above, I'd say that if you like Boss units, there's a company called GLX, who make some VERY good copys of Boss pedals, so they're worth a look.

In my experience, I prefer the Behringer copies of the Boss units. My opinion of course. So...if you are going in the cheap direction, check out the Behringers before the GLX series.

Some great advice and suggestions here. I always check the classifieds before buying new.

As far as muffs are concerned, I've been really enjoying my Bass Big Muff. Great value in this pedal (new or used). If your patient, look for a sale and you can get up to 20% off. I got my Bass Big Muff on a sale like this for $65.00 including tax and shipping.

You mention "high end" pedal, what does that mean to you in terms of $$$$? High End can cover a pretty wide range in prices and is a little subjective.

For higher end muff types of fuzzes I'd also suggest checking into a Blackout Effectors Musket Fuzz. I recently purchased one and it is more flexible than the Bass Big Muff.....though I wish it had blend capability (like the Bass Big Muff).

If "high end" to you means $300 - 400.00 I'd also suggest looking into the Line 6 M9. It's new and experiences are just starting to be reported on the board, but it appears to be a really good, solid multi-effect. The M9 also models many of the effects you mentioned (if not all).

Hope this helps!
