I have a new addiction...

Sign in to disble this ad
instead of buying pedals, my new addiction has been the DIY kits. I ordered the Brassmaster kit from GGG and so far have been loving how it has been going. Unfortunately, a messed up a few resistors so have new ones on order from Mouser. Every pedal I have opened up, never has 1% tolerance resistors, but the GGG kit came with them and for a fraction of the price.

I'm already hooked. I'm plotting for a BYOC Mutron Octave Divider clone next, but instead of using toggle switches, I plan to try and make footswitches fit to kick in the different octaves on the fly.

It started out small...just a capcitor here, a few resistors there, a new opamp for the Rat, new preamps for the basses...and then it GREW INTO THIS.

I am about to go down this path as well. Building some kits is my New Year's Resolution. The BrassMaster is probably going to be my second build. I am going to do a really simple fuzz circuit first (maybe a fuzzface).

Also, did you use Germanium or Silicon on the Brass Master?

I'm thinking about ordering a few kits in the new year as well. I was thinking about building a fuzz first and eventually a Snow White Auto Wah kit. I'm actually kinda more exited about decorating the boxes.

If you want a crazy, cool, and cheap fuzz, check out the Dwarfcraft The Great Destroyer:

I've always wanted to built one of these kits. What would be a relatively simple first build? Maybe a Fuzz?

From what I have read, a boost is probably the easiest but Fuzz is a good place to start.
That TGD kit looks rad and I hear it is pretty easy. It is now on my list of beginner builds for myself.

Thanks Daz! I am going through the obsessing stage that is part of when I get interested in learning something. Found a really cool website about how to read circuits, what the components are doing, etc. Welcome to the Electronics Club

I found an android app called ElectroDroid that has some cool stuff on it too.

GGG and BYOC are the two best, well organized I've seen. But if you're comfy with a drill, it's cheaper to order an enclosure, the components from Mouser, and the PCB from BYOC....GGG is lower priced. My Brassmaster kit was only 65.

@Delta: I'm not sure. I think Germanium is what it comes with. All I know is that the components were VERY high quality.

EDIT:: All I can really say for certainty is that it sounds closer to an original Brassmaster than even the B:Assmaster.

Next on my list is the Divided Octave from BYOC and a Lazy Sprocket/Slow Gear clone.

I'm thinking of building one of the great destroyer kits from dwarf craft. Super cheap for what you get! All the other kit assemblers have a surcharge for putting everything in a box for you. Save yourself like 20-40% buy figuring out what you need and gathering the parts yourself.

Also guitarpcb.com has reasonably priced kits. Buy parts through mammoth electronics. Cheaper than small bear and much easier website to use than any other component website IMHO. plus super fast and friendly service!!

Doesn't get any easier than 7 components on the board! Good luck!
