WHats up peeps
I play through a 98 swr 350, 8x8 & a 15 cab, w/a 92 modulus w/ EMGs. i need a crunchier Justin Chancellor type of sound for my current band and have bought and returned no less than 6 pedals. They all sound awful, noisy and completley cut out the bottom end.
I am new to effects, what am i missing here? should i be running things through the effects loop or not? should i look at a preamp even with this setup? any ideas would be great.
thanks!

You don't need to use an fx loop, but there's a type of pedal called a blender which works like a blendable fx loop but at the correct signal level for pedals in front of an amp; and those blenders are perfect for getting all the low end of your bass combined with the treble snarl of a dirt pedal. Search here on the word "blender" for more details and brand recommendations. Also if you click into the compression FAQ in my sig line, there's a section there on using the fx loop of your amp.
"Preamp" actually means different things to different people, so be wary when you read that X or Y pedal is a preamp. They don't all work the same way. |

If your trying to get his 'dry' tone (no effects) its going to be tough withought a Wal bass (which cost a car and are discontinued), what you can do is boost your low mids a lot, then boost your treble a bit. You'll resemble his tone a bit with those eq changes. Also, use a pick, and pick pretty hard. If you want his overdrive sound, I would suggest a pro co rat, blender, and eq pedal, youll want to blend your dry tone with the blender pedal, and then boost some lows with the eq pedal (the rat cuts your lows). A bassdrive can also get a tone similar to his. The effects is a whoooolllle another world, as you can see by his overdrive sound. Do some SEARCHES here and you will be amazed by how many people have asked the same question. Anyways, im sure somone else on here knows more about getting his tone then me. |

thanks man. I have been playing for a while in a lot of jazz fusion stuff clean...so effects and pedals are relativly new to me. dont wanna sound arrogant but the biggest complaint is that everything i have tried sounds "cheap". im not looking to copy chancellor's sound, just using it as an example of a heavier but not metal/distortion sound. |
