I need a new fuzz pedal

I have the EHX bass big muff, my first fuzz pedal... and im not really happy with it. i cant reel it in to make the sound i want, and i have to dedicate my PDDI to mellow it out and make it sound how i want.
but thats an expensive combination

i want a creamy fuzz, something like the bass breakdown to Prisoner by Needtobreathe, or the intro to Crawl by Kings of Leon. or even Hysteria, but that is due to his synth effects too..

i guess i just want to know the character in comparison to eachother of some pedals such as the swollen pickle, the regular big muff, the fuzz factory, the wolly mammoth, any Devi ever pedals.

i want to spend around 100 bucks, much less would be nice.
but i am more looking for a good fuzz.

can someone help me out?

when you say 'reel it in', you make it seem like it's too aggressive? Is that the case?

I use a Marshall Guv'nor GV-2 Plus. It's actually a guitar pedal but it has a bass knob. I have the bass knob turned to 5 o'clock (not quite cranked) and I lose no bottom end. Right now I have it sounding like a buzz similar to the intro to Time Is Running Out by Muse. Another cool thing about the Guv'nor is that at just about every music store I've seen it at in my town, it's only $60. If your looking for fuzz that sounds like Crawl by Kings Of Leon, I'd say go with a Boss ODB-3. To my ears, that fuzz has a 'static' sort of sound and I find I can achieve that with my ODB-3. Hope this helps.

Both Jared Followill (KoL) and Christopher Wolstenholme (Muse) use the standard EHX big muff have you considered that?

yeah, as in its too aggressive.
i imagined that the big muff doenst sound too different than the bass big muff.
also, Jared's tone probably has a bit to do with the T-bird, its a smooth bass. whereas ive got a jazz and a P.

also, a good example would be Mean Mr. Mustard by the beatles. its one of the first introductions of bass fuzz, but its the sound i want.

ive got an ODB-3, and its just tooo fizzy. which, to me is the opposite of creamy.

1) The least aggressive sound you will get out of the Bass Big Muff is using the dry switch setting and then turning down the sustain knob. So give that some time if you've not already.

2) Muffs in general move toward more sizzle and harmonics, and while some of them could get described as smooth or creamy, but I'm not sure its what you are looking for (generally higher gain).

3) I'm having a hard time thinking of a recommendation for lower gain fuzz in your price range, the market is mostly for metal kids

Have you considered high-gain overdrives instead of low-gain fuzz? I know people have compared the tone you get with some high-grain overdrives to the tone you can get by turning down the gain on some other fuzzy boxes. Which specific boxes I'm not sure, though.

I've not bought any fuzz pedals as of yet, but have researched quite a few...so far, my fuzz GAS goes to the Fender Sublime.

I bought the MXR Blowtorch... I don't know if anyone's had any experience with this pedal.. but it's very diverse... it's my favorite fuzz... don't know if it'll be too aggressive for what you're looking for.. I honestly need to mess with it more.. because I found one I liked very quickly without playing around with it too much....

A Bluebeard is my favorite along with the hard to find Tortuga Sasquatch, so I always recommend those. But sounds like you need something with a tighter bottom and fuzz doesn't really do that without other effects, compression, and studio mixing.

I've always thought of the Muff sound at heavy saturation as being the definition of 'creamy'. It gets quite soft-sounding the more you crank it. That Kings Of Leon tune could well be a Muff, IMO.

Maybe you need more fuzz, not less, if it's not getting creamy enough for you. I've never used the 'bass big muff' - does anyone know if it's tamer than your average big muff?

also, try the EHX bass big muff in dry mode like Grygrx said with the sustain knob turned back, but also try turning the volume knob back as that is just the volume of your fuzz signal that is being blended with the dry... you can get some very subtle overdrive tones that way.

also, do yourself a favor and youtube search for the Fender Sublime. Both I and Grygrx have done demos and it is STELLAR!!!

You should be able to pick up a black russian for under 100. I agree the BBM is way to digital sounding - like songs on a ipod.
