I need an overdrive.

Sign in to disble this ad
where do i begin?

i have been told by my church that for some of the songs i sound too sterile and need to dirty things up significantly

so since my sound is too clean for the church what should i look for?

i imagine i should look at the SANSAMP BDDI but i was thinking a separate EQ; DI; and a distortion, overdrive, or fuzz. would sound better. what is the all around go to pedal for sounding grungy?

Well, there's alot out there in the bass OD/distortion/fuzz world. Personally I love (as most people on here will agree that I do) Ashdown & Blackstar pedals, so I suggest that you give both of those a try, other very good competors are the Sansamp, aswell as the Digitech Bad Monkey

I love Dave Hall Amp (DHA) products. I also would try the search function.

Nah, there's just been LOADS of threads about overdrives, really, you can help us out with giving you advice by telling us what amp & bass you have & what kinda distortion/gritty sound you want (easiest with names artists)

I use both a Bad Monkey and a BDDI in church. Both sound good, both sound different. I prefer to use the BDDI as a sound-shaper rather than necessarily an OD - I blend in a bit of mild dirt and use the EQ. The Bad Monkey is my main overdrive. It's cheap, well-constructed, and if you buy used and it's not your thing you can sell for what you paid for it. IMHO you can't lose. It also has a speaker-emulated out (which I prefer the sound of for some things), which adds versatility.

Steve

Well then, I'd guess the best distortion for you (IMO) would be the Sansamp BDDI, as it can sound similar to those bands & can be ran straight into the PA

I'd just like to point out that the idea of a church telling someone to "dirty it up" made me chuckle.

I like overdrives with tubes... EBS Valve Drive and Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket are good examples. The Mesa OD is out of production, so it may be a little harder to find, but they're out there.

my church gig is straight to DI ( with IEM) andfrom my experience you have to be very careful about your choice of OD / dirt.
currently i have four (five if you count the MXR m80 or hartke vxl - dependant on the set) dirt boxes on my board - mxr blowtorch, DOD bass grunge, EHX bass big muff, and boss HM2 MIJ. i also add other things like the ashdown LoMenzo od, or cream pie, or bad monkey (stock) as required by the set.
YMMV, but i can get so many varieties of tone without too much hassle.
FYI i also have chorus, delay, wah, filter, and sub generator permanently on my board. i have most things covered.
PM me if you want to chat further dude

Thank you. Why this wasn't post #2 I'm not sure...

Overdrive is an 'effect'... and its the most beat-to-death horse in the effects forum To the topic at hand: So, the church needs you to dirty it up eh, hmm... sounds like a case for Big Johns Hairy Balls!

I'm pretty sure they would make me cover the name of that pedal with tape especially since I'm often called Big Jon

Yes, it must be name appropriate, so you need a "The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth" distortion...which nobody makes...
Perhaps a Prunes & Custard? Or is that decadent?
Just keep you Bass Muff at home.

Great things have been said about the Tech21 VT Bass Character pedal. It's cheaper than the Sansamp BDDI and is made by the same company. Do a search; lots of people have been singing it's praises here, about how it can get a decent overdrive and emulate an SVT or B-15...

as soon as I made my last post I remembered the VT pedal. Mine is last in the chain and on 75% of the time. I set and forget...but one could use it for clean and/or dirty.
