i've been thinking about changing some things around on my board for a while. i play a good bit of rock and funk, so i like some grit but right now i'm using two pedals to get the sound i want; together they sound great, but i'd like a single pedal to save space, so i've decided to ditch the pair and, well...consolidate
i haven't tried very many options, mainly because the selection at local music stores isn't great. i can't give many examples of the sound i want, but i can say that i do NOT want a fuzz. the settings i use are on the tame side, so maybe something that can emulate a good tube drive?
my budget isn't fantastic, but i've been looking up things like the Bass Muff, ODB3 and the Hardwire Tube drive.
i guess a good way to ask this is: "you could have one tame OD for under $100, what is it?"

| | | | For an all around GREAT preamp for warming up your sound....just adding some grind....or a pretty heavy overdrive - my pick for you would be either the Xotic BB Bass preamp or new EWS tri-logic preamp.
The EWS has a mid control and sounds FANTASTIC. Bass BB has no mid but sounds amazing nonetheless.
The BB is the first pedal in my chain and basically my "always-on" gritty sound. |

| | | | Just for your own info....the Bass BB is $168 and EWS is $152 |

I'd suggest a used Pork Loin, but not knowing what kind of overdrive sound you want, it's difficult. btw, I use the Xotic BB Pre-- perfectly tuned for bass, super upper mids and tons of low so works very well in a chain...small size too. Still, the overdrive I use the most- Devi Ever Karioki Party. At $97 it's in your range. |

Steve | I'll second that. I dig the Bad Monkey a lot. Mine is on my guitarist's board right now, though. It would be a bit redundant with my other pedals, anyway. |

The OD has a good smooth grind but drops lows, so I run the fuzz with the "fuzz" knob dialed down. It adds some thickness, and the slight bit of clip along with the bluesy drive is perfect...just don't know what would get me close n not break the bank...
Except maybe the bad monkey...hmm

I have gone thru a bunch of fuzz & right now i have 4 on the board and can't seem to decide which one i could do without.
Boss SD1> guitar overdrive but it still works on bass
Electronix Cross Drive> Brown Sound for Bass
Hjart Muller Lo|Fat> nice chunky overdrive with lots of lows
GGG Brassmaster> Super fuzzed out octave bass |

(P&C and AG have blends) but something about the mid-ranges of the P&C into the KP does something unique, a roar with an envelope too (not what the P&C can do alone, it's the KP added)(and loudness)
to the op, I'm not sure what's going on with your combo; usually, once you take initial lows out, they are gone even with an equalizer, but with dano stuff, who knows? Analysis fails, does it sound right? Two pedals ain't a lot.
