I need some advice about distortion

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I'm a somewhat new bass player and I am wondering what people's opinions are on Big Muff Pi bass distortion and which versions are best.
I've read a lot of stuff that says the Russian ones are really good and smooth with no low end loss but there are plenty of different models to choose from, my head is kinda spinning at the possibilities.
Or if anyone thinks a particular bass overdrive pedal would be better, that would be helpful too.
I'm looking for a sound like in the song Hysteria by Muse, if that helps.

~Thanks~

1) Try searching the forum

2) Get the Bass Big Muff

3) There is no single pedal that will get you an exact Muse tone

4) Welcome to TB

If you're looking to cop the Hysteria tone, you won't find it in one pedal, but if you check out these threads, they'll give you a good idea of what will:

Muse bass effects

Difference between Big Muff Pi and Russian

Before you create a Muse thread

Also, you could send a private message to FreaqyFrequency, he's a Muse nut

But the real answer to your question is that you should go down to your local guitar shop and try as many fuzzboxes as possible!

Trying as many dirt pedals as you can is the best idea, and if for whatever reason you're even a bit unsure, or can't find a pedal to try out, don't forget you can alwys buy used through the classifieds here, that way if you don't like it you can sell it for what you paid! Just look at the paypal and shipping fees as a rental fee!

Everything that everyone has said so far is correct - try as many as you can, BBM is probably the best Muff made by EHX, Hysteria tone is not doable with just a distortion pedal (so far anyway...)

Here is a link to a thread full of people trying to get the Hysteria tone:

In search of an Akai DI tone.
