I think I've decided what distortion I might use...

Well, I was thinking that perhaps a SansAmp Bass Driver DI would work for me. Yeah, it's expensive. But I guess hearing a few soundclips would coax me to still consider using the effect. What's more, a programmable would be really useful, as it could give me...
a) Overdrive, more than my amplifier, but less than the distortion effect.
b) Distortion (H., )
c) Fuzz (Hysteria, Time Is Running Out, just about everything by Muse)

I would only use it for distortion. I don't think I would use it as a DI box or a preamp. I'm already considering the Sadowsky Preamp/DI box.

I had the Sansamp BDDI and the RBI. Nice, but for distortion, I prefer the MXR M80. A thicker distortion if you will.

Kickin little box built like a tank.

Tell you what, decide once you've used it. Then decide again a little while later. Then decide again after a few weeks.

Once you've been using it happily for a good amount of time, then tell us what you've decided.

How do you decide its the distortion to use without hearing it yet?

+1 to Bongo

What about a Boss OD-20?
Heaps of different sounds, 2 band eq, octaver, speaker sim.....
Not too expensive and I've heard they are pretty good.

I think you are overrating the amount of distortion that the unit provides if you think you can cop all three of those tones. It's primary function is to be a preamp, not a distortion. The grit it can potentially provide is just a by product of cranking it. It doesn't do multiple types of distortion.

icarussmicarus is totally right, but I think it needs to be stated better. The SansAmp Bass Driver DI can not give you a very distorted tone, so it can not do what you want. And there is especially no way to get fuzz out of it.

Oh. Ok. I guess a BOSS ODB-3 and/or a Big Muff might do instead.

The SABDDI is a wonderful tool, and can provide some very good sounds - from clean to warm, tubey drive. It serves beautifully as a DI for live playing and recording. The SABDDI also can be used as a preamp or just an effects box. However, one thing it WILL NOT do is fuzz. Fuzz is extreme distortion of the signal to the point of creating a square soundwave (ref. FAQ's for a description of OD vs. distortion vs. fuzz), and the SABDDI just can't get there - and it's not intended to.

If you like what you've heard (that IS a good enough reason to buy ANYTHING! ), go for it. You certainly wouldn't even consider it if you didn't like how it sounded. Other people have other preferences based on their needs and their ears, not yours. Go for what gets the job done for YOU, not what's popular.

One thing about the SABDDI (regular and programmable), is that the resale value is pretty good. If it turns out you hate it, you won't take a big loss. Better yet, try and buy a used one yourself.
