There are a number of inexpensive multi-effects units for bass that are great for beginners. Try searching for "multieffects", "multi-effects", etc.

Zoom, Boss, Line 6, and Digitech all make decent, cheap multieffects units for bass, as well as some more expensive ones.

As far as plugging it in is concerned, it goes like this: Bass => Multieffects Unit => Amp Input

Your amp might have an effects loop, but it isn't meant for most pedal effects. Pedals usually work best in-line with your bass, going into the amp's normal input. Same for multi-effects units.

At risk of sounding like a jerk, I would actually recommend that you skip the effects for a while. Read up on them, sure, and see what you like, but seeing as how you are new to the bass, you might want to focus more on your playing and master the basics before you move on to making weird noises. Honestly, if you were planning on spending $100 on an effects unit, you would be WAY better off spending that money on a few lessons.

Screw lessons! We want LOUD.

I would get a distortion pedal before anything else, but I'm anti-multifx thingies. Something like a Boss DS-1 used for $20.

In another thread caleb said the store gave him a distortion pedal for free to go with his new practice amp, but they didn't show him how to plug the pedal into the amp, and he wasn't able to figure it out. I advised that he should go back to the shop and ask them to show him how to plug the pedal into the amp.

Once he's got that figured out, then we can advise on effects, multi or otherwise.
