I want to get more into effects

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I want to get more into effects, so by the end of the year I hope to have:

EHX Frequency Analyzer
SansAmp VT Bass Character
Boss RC-20XL
Aphex Bass Xciter

Wish I could get but too expensive right now:
Z.Vex Fuzz Factory
EHX Micro Synth
EHX Deluxe Memory Man
EHX POG

In addition to my Dunlop Bass Wah.

Any suggestions on some cool, weird, crazy pedals that are cheap?

Go with used FXs and the world is your oyster.

Envelope Filters.....

I like my Digitech Synth Wah (g***** version). I like it because it seems to push the highs a little better than the Digitech Bass Synth Wah; hither too referred to as BSW. I also like it because there are a lot of voicings from straight up envelope filter, to some really fuzzy synthy stuff, in up or down.

I had an EHX Q-tron for a bit (it's pricey) but I didn't find it too user friendly. What can I say I'm lazy. I went when the SW came.

There are tons of envelope filters out there, lots to choose from.

Consider that most (if not all) EHX stuff is 24v, non-battery operable (the other thing I didn't like about the Q-Tron). There is a powersupply out there that will power although I'm not sure which one, or you can use one spots.

Stay far away from the Moog LPF, Meatball, Meatwad, Prometheus, or The Grinder. If the Q-Tron is too much, these are insane overkill.

Actually a lot of EHX's stuff isn't 24v. Many of their things are 9v, 12v AC (tube pedals), or some random voltage: 9.6v, 18v, or reverse polarity. Most of the EHX line works off of 9v dc though, and/or batteries (the russian pedals only work off of batteries).

As for cool pedals, there's a HUGE wealth of knowledge around here. What kind of sounds are you looking for? Something to match a particular song or style of playing, or something just for fun?

something to have fun, just kinda go crazy. I also like stuff like the Bass Xciter and the Sansamp VT Bass Character to add to my tone

I'd pretty much recommend NOT going for effects while you still have a choice. Once you're in, it's like a very very addictive drug. something pretty epiphonical has to happen before you can stop waking up in the middle of the night with pedal board layout ideas.
I'm not saying a definite DON'T DO IT, i'm just saying there are other solutions out there that are way less intense and sound just as good.

do what im doing: start small, and experiment. dont go out and spend hundreds on a pedal. what i would do is make a list of the sounds you want, and then tell us. you may also try finding a used cheap multi effects unit so you can try it out, and determine what effects you like and dont like, what yo uuse and dont use, then buy single pedals that you use. then sell the multipedal, or keep it for the random sounds you dont use enough t owarrant buying a pedal. when i first started getting into effects, i started with a list of 5 kinds of pedals. then expanded to more like 10 (i think it was just temporary lust for the behemoth pedalboards ive seen on here), and now im back down. i would start with a wah, a distortion, a chorus, and an eq/di box and work up from there. id reccomend:
wah: ibanez weeping demon, vox wah, or dunlop 105q
distortion: ibanez pd7 (i have one and like it alot), boss odb-3, r digitech bass driver
chorus: boss ceb-3 or digitech bass multichorus
eq/di: tech 21 sansamp bass driver di (or the cheaper but near identical behringer bdi21), mxr m-80, or seymour-duncan paranormal di box
currently all i have is the pd7, but i have a digitech multichorus on the way, and a wah will be in my arsenal probably by next paycheck

welcome to the wide world of effects. enjoy. and please, dont throw rocks

I want just a little bit of drive, like an overdriven tube amp, but also want some nice fuzz, and I see the VT has that.

With a VT-Bass, would I really need a Aphex bass xciter?

I don't think you'd need one at all. False-sounding boosts aren't my thing at all.

They do two totally different things. I have the Aphex Bass Xciter and I've got a VT Bass on order (It's been backordered for three friggin' months!) and I'm planning on using them together.

The Bass Xciter is sort of an instant "sound better" box. It can be kind of a quick cheater fix for not-so-great sounding amps and PA systems. I use it as a DI box for my amp-less church worship team, and it works pretty well for that, given that we don't really have a great sound setup.

The VT Bass is a tube amp simulator preamp. It replicates the sound of a bunch of classic Ampegs and gives you some overdrive.

I think my tones alright, but it'll probably sound a lot better w/ the Aphex, right?

Maybe, maybe not. I can't say I ever played a rig that needed one. YMMV, of course.
