I want my Ibanez to sound like a MusicMan

I want my passive entry level GSR-190 to sound like an active Stingray. Is there an effects pedal that will come close? My amp is a Fender Rumble 2x10. Thanks!

You could buy an outboard active preamp pedal or something, but I don't know enough about active preamps to suggest something similar to what you'd find in a Stingray. Other than that what kind of pickups does your bass have? I wouldn't count on being able to make single coil pickups sound like one of those big stingray humbuckers, and really trying to EQ single coils to sound like humbuckers is a real half measure in my book.

The other thing you might be looking for is a simple fresh set of strings.

No. The ATK300 which is the closest thing to a Stingray, and it still doesn't get it exactly.

Yep, in addition to pickups you need body mass to get the Stingray sound. ATK is not exactly Stingray, but it's very similar and has its own charming sound. --Kent

No pedal is going to get you that sound. The bass itself is the issue - a P/J bass (like what you have) is NOTHING like a Stingray.

The closest on the Ibanez side of things would be out of their ATK series. If looking beyond Ibanez, check out OLP basses - they make an MM-style bass which works well on a budget.

Mark - thanks for replying. I'll explore the preamps. The p/u's on the GSR are P/J - I don't know if they are single coil. I'm just looking for a simple solution (pedal) to hold me over until I upgrade. Thanks

P = split-coil

J = single-coil

MM = a really big humbucker

The simplest solution would be to emphasize your bridge pickup. Crank the tone knob if you want a brighter sound.

Yes, I understand there is no comparison between the 2 basses. I tried the ATK and didn't like the feel of it. I'll check out the OLP's - thanks for the tip!

GSR-190/GSR-200 is an agathis body, VVT, passive P/J. There's not much you can do to make it sound like a StingRay, IMHO. I suppose you could rout it out for a MM pickup and stuff a Seymour Duncan active preamp in it, but what would be the point of that? It's got a nice thin playable neck, and it's a good value for what it is. But it is what it is. I wouldn't recommend modding this bass - save your money for your next bass.

The Bass Company (TBC) also makes inexpensive basses that can cop a good Stingray tone:

I'd say the best thing to do would be to rock the Ibanez, work as much as you can without going insane and save up for a Stingray. Nothing will make a better stingray sound than a ray itself.
