I totally want to emultae this Krist Novoselic's tone for this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zr1dVYNJic
His bass part starts at 2:53 (There are 2 bass parts in the song.)
I am open to buying stuff but nothing over $200-$300.
I have a P-bass with rounds if and an SD Quarter Pounder that helps. I also have a Bronco that's going to get SD Hot Rails with a series/parallel switch. I've only been playing for about a year so I don't know about effects; I don't have any pedals (open to buying one), and I am running it through a terrible 15 watt Crate guitar amp (gonna get a new amp for Christmas). Thanks!
EDIT: Here is a live video where the guitarist (Pat Smear) does Krist's part on a double neck guitar bass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=738EW...64B2EFCD1113B5
He comes in at 3:12 on this one.

| | Reads well and plays nice with others... | | Join Date: Apr 2004 Location: Southwestern Pennsylvania | | | Since you've asked... Find out what kind of bass he uses, what's it made of, what strings are used, what pickups, what electronics.
Then, find out what kinds of pedals are used...anything in the chain.
Then, what kind of amp, what are its settings, and what are the speakers.
Of course, if there's a sound guy or engineer involved, then you'll have to find out all about that gear too.
If you find the tone you want to call your own, you have to experiment with everything until you find it.
Interestingly, once you find it, play with a band, and go into the studio, your idea of tone means squat. It's what the producer wants to hear and what the engineer can make happen to produce the best recording possible in that person's mind. You just happen to be the one providing the bottom line, so your playing better be clean, tasteful and tight with the drummer. Maybe you can add some solo-oriented licks every now and then.

He was playing a Gibson (Grabber, I think) on that track (you can see him recording it on the Wasting Light DVD). I think it was just a overdriven tube amp of some kind. Great tone, though.....

EDIT: I mistakenly linked to a Vampire Weekend video I was showing my friend. I'll switch it out right now. |

Z | Ugh, who are these engineers and producers you've worked with? Their job is to realize YOUR vision, not the other way around. Clean tasteful and tight? No . Frigging. Thank you. How boring. Not every bassist's job is to go "thump thump thump"
Sorry for the derail. |

I feel like I could tweak a number of bass drives to get a tone like that'un. pork loin is probably a good place to start. A BassDrive can get tones like that, as could any number of sansamp products. Just remember, your bass and amp are going to have much more of an impact on your tone than a pedal will.

At 2:14 it looks like a rat next to his foot. And ofcourse the Ripper has something to say. Black has such a special tone to it!
