So im thinking of buying an Ibanez pd7 overdrive/distortion pedal to add to my board, having tried one i really enjoy the tones it can give and like the idea of the Tonelok settings
anyone else own one of these or had any experience with them? |

I thought it was the best of the "cheapies". i.e not the best but you have to get pretty spendy to get a better sound. Love the separate bass and treble controls, works well as a line level boost pedal as well.

I especially liked the attack functions on the pedal, crank the attack and turn up the distortion and you get a nice grindy sound (I used it for metal frequently)
It's not the best pedal I've tried, but you can get them used pretty cheap. Not worth the money if you buy it new though. |

Some people like that though so it's all good. It is one of the better "cheap" pedals.
especially if you can find it used. |

I want more of a warm, organic sound for OD. What is real good about it is that there is very little low end loss. I mostly use right now in the clean setting, which causes a slight breakup when you dig in.
I bought mine used. The guy i bought it from was selling a Boss Bass Overdrive as well. I checked out both, but took the Ibanez home. Hard to beat for $25.
But it will be gone in the next couple of months. Saving up for something under $100, not sure what yet, though.

I was hoping for some mild overdrive from the box but was let down. I couldn't get what I was looking for. After giving it some more play time I found a setting that sounds great with my ESP LTD B-4E when played with a pick. I don't normally play with a pick so I don't get to take advantage of that sound very often. It still sounds nice when played finger style, which is good.
I'm glad I stuck with the pedal. It is far from what I wanted but I have a Sansamp Programmable BDDI now so I have that tone taken care of. The Phat Hed is fun to have around so I'll be holding on to it for now. I had asked about it in another thread and was told that it worked nicely with a wah pedal. It does sound pretty darn good. Distortion sure does make wah sound neat.
The Tone Lok feature is really nice. I've put the Ibanez delay pedal at the top of my list of delay pedals because of it. I don't want to spend a lot and that is one very handy feature. |

| | | | I have a PD7 and I love the bass boost, it sounds round and tight. It is always on in my chain clean or dirty, because of the bass boost. A good thing is that you can switch from clean to dirty and have a fairly similar sound as far as bass frequencies are concerned. Full bass and treble gives a nice slap sound. If you use the attack function you lose lots of bass but you can correct with the bass control. I find attack #2 too much, #1 is just great to give your slap a more aggresive edge. And it works great with extreme distortion for a grindy metal sound as mentioned... |

I bought a lot of overdrive/distortion pedals on eBay trying to find some that would work the way I wanted them to, with the idea of selling again the ones I didn't like enough.
I still have the PD7. I like the sound a lot. But I find it too noisy, it adds a lot of hiss, so I rarely use it... But everytime I think of selling it, I try it and I just like it too much. |

I'm on my 2nd Ibanez tonelok Bass Syth though. It isn't on my main board, but it was. For it's envelope only; it's no synth, but excellent envelope on slow speed. |

I actually have it on most of the time unless I am using a fuzz or synth (actually on one song I keep it turned on before my synth and it sounds quite delicious).
I've actually found that I like the distortion setting better than the OD mode as I can get a fairly smooth, slightly dirty sound out of it with a lot of cut, where the OD mode is actually harsher to my ears. The clean mode is also good as a boost or tone shaper, and most of the time if I'm not using the distortion it is on in Clean.
Anyway, for the price of it, I don't think there's anything better, nor for several times the price. I have a Bogdan as well, but the PD-7 definitely kills, for me.

mainly used in the overdrive setting,... excellent for boosting into a wah,... but when I do want that grindy distortion mode it works wonders,... just hate the attack modes cos it feels like a very bad take off of fieldy!
oh yeah and low end boost from it is very nice indeed

My favorite setting is level at 10 o clock,Lo at 1 o clock, and Hi at 3. Gives a little bit of dirt with light playing, but not very noticeable, but if you want more just dig in and it sounds awesome.
I've posted this before but this is just a clip i made with my pd7 with said settings http://www.zshare.net/audio/79926640a932c907/
If you want more mids..thats what your amp is for.
