Ibanez Tube screamer TS9

Sign in to disble this ad
The other day while on my way to band practice I heard this really nice dirt bass tone coming from one of the other practice rooms, afterwards I just had to ask the bass player what pedal he was using and to my surprise he showed me this Tube screamer guitar pedal by Ibanez, the tone sounded very "tubish" with a nice punch too it. Any one else use this pedal and what do u guys think??

Thanks

Most dudes on here would prefer a modded TS or a TS clone made more bass-friendly.
I just got a Fulltone Bassdrive MOSFET and LOVE it!

I used one in the 80s... always loved the tone. I switched to a cleaner tone for most of the 90s and got rid of my TS9. Now that I've come back to using effects and dirt... I have an analog.man KoT so I haven't picked up a new TS9.

The originals were made by Maxon and rebranded by Ibanez... if you are looking new, Maxon makes the better pedal.

cheaper?

Maxon stuff is basically mass produced boutique pedals (IMO/E). Current Ibanez stuff is junk in comparison (again IMO/E... I do own and use an Ibanez made reissue AD9). Maxon was the original Ibanez effect designer / manufacturer, current Ibanez effects are copies of the stuff Maxon use to build for them.

I have an original TS9 from the early 80's. It's killer for electric guitar, but for bass I find it rolls off too much low end.

I haven't used a TS9 on bass, but my TS5 sucks way too much low end for my taste. But for cheap tubescreamer thrills on bass, the Bad Monkey by Digitech great - it's a TS-style analog circuit, but rather than a simple treble rolloff like the TS's it has treble and bass controls, which let you avoid a lot of the bass-suck. Cheap, solid, sounds great.

I use an early 80's Ibanez SD9 (Sonic Distortion), and it sounds pretty good for bass. It's like a TS9, but pissed off. I do notice a loss of low end, but it has a great focus on the mids without making my bass sound like a guitar.

Another good pedal is the Boss HM2 or HM3. I use one for The Doors' "Five To One", and it pretty much nails it.

The Turbo Tube screamer is really nice on bass.In Turbo mode you get a really nice smooth overdrive, with no loss of low end.

I found the Ibanez TS9DX to be a pretty good, bass friendly OD. It is designed to let the bass frequencies through a little better. I eventually got rid of it in favor of some other bass specific OD, but you can certainly pick one up for a good price.

I've tried the tube screamer both the maxon and ibanez versions, The maxon is better it has a warmer sound to it, but they both take too much of the low end and boost the highs, I would suggest something like a SansAmp that has Low, Mid, and High controls.

I have a TS9 clone, not modded. It makes heavenly tubey sounds out of most any amp. Nice full rounded Overdrive. The loss of low, in my particular unit, is nothing to die about.

If it helps, I use it with an active eq'd bass, thru a single 15' driver. Pure bliss.
