It's chorus that has optional modulation, so you can use it just as a multi-voice de-tuner. It also allows much more detuning than most choruses use. I run mine with modulation off and it sounds sweet as a chorus, plenty of apparent motion with a clean input due to beats between the detuned voices, but with octave+dirt ahead it sounds much more synthy without the modulation.
OP I think what may be happening is that when you balance the polytope with the clean signal, although it sounds unity to your ears, you're probably actually adding a bit of boost. The destructive interference of the detuned signals with each other and with the clean seems to natually lead to this.
Turn on some dirt upstream and all of the new harmonic content reveals the boost. Also, the dirt is probably above unity as well.
I wouldn't stress on it too much if it sounds good it probably is good.
