Definitely MXR M-80 Bass DI+. It has EQ (including 1 factory preset that is so sweet and still tweakble) and a separate Distortion channel that sound good. I think it's about US$140. Or if you want to get more, maybe a multi effects is much suited for you as they provide many effect options. I heard the zoom 708 II is pretty good, but I've never tried it myself. The boss GT-6B and ME-50B might also worth to check out.

+1 to badboy.

But really it comes down to your actual cash budget, because you could still spend $1000 on a single pedal!

You shoul get a multi for sure, because It doesn't sound like you know what you want in an effect pedal. I think blowing your limited cash on a single effect will be a bit of a disapointment.

With a multi, you will have a tuner, possibly some drum loops and a heap of effects to play around with. You should be able to pick up a used one relatively cheap.

....And then when you can afford another/more/better pedals you'll have an idea of what you're looking for.

+1 on the Zoom B2 or B2.1u. They are really decent multi units for the same price as a single.

I would probably get the TC Electronic G System.

I just realized that you don't have much cash. Then I would probably go with the Zoom.

Ring modulator all the way.

Seriously man give us some direction. This is like asking "I can only get one item off the menu, what should I get?" It's all about what you like.

Could you go a little further into this? I've never heard of a BMS...I'monna try to google it, but I'd like to hear form someone who has experience with it.

Yeah, Mudd.
Bass Micro Synth

Not the best octaver, not the best fuzz, not the best envelope, not the best slow gear...but if I could only have one...

Really nice analog synth!

Just to be extra-annoying, I've looked up some info, but what are the advantages of the Zoom B2.1u over the standard Zoom B2?

Just the USB? Expression pedal capability? Wider array of beats?

I'm very interested in this. I've heard great things about the Zoom pedals for guitar...I prefer analog stuff, but for now, I think this would be a lot of fun and the price is excellent.

The B2.1u has USB, an XLR and an expression pedal. It's well worth the extra $50 or so. I have the B2. It's very flexible as a preamp, eq, etc. You can get some decent OD and other effects out of it too. I use single effects as well but I don't really want to spend hundreds on a hand full of effects that I use once in a while.
