I'm not into amp modelling so I would only look at strictly multi fx - IMO the bass pod is not a string fx unit, it's strength is in amp modelling.
Either the TC Nova System or (if money was no object) the G System, if they work well with bass, although i see no reason why not. They are also analogue effects, so none of those nasty digital sounding artifacts.
Or the new Rocktron Uptopia B200 & B300. I'm really intrigued by these as I know how good their other stuff is. I look forward to reading reviews on this soon and perhaps trying one out.
I have the Boss Gt6B, and some of it is ok, but a lot of the truly useful effects like compression and the drive model are really, really bad. The sound very artificial and digital. The drives sound like digital clipping, no gentle warmth at all. I can't see the GT10B being much better, but I'd like to be proven wrong.
I'm also intrigued by the new Zoom 9.1ut as it seems to be very versatile, but in that price bracket and having used zoom stuff before will it be better than the TC or Rocktron, perhaps not.
TBH, I don't think there exists a multi fx unit with everything that I need and want, so I'll make do with individual stompboxes.
There is however another option, but a not a cheap one, and perhaps not for your avergae pub gig. Either a laptop running NI Guitar Rig with dedicated pedal system, or IK Multimedia's Amplitube SVX with their pedal board. Althought these are primarlity amp modellers, the fx are just as good, and they are almost infinitely tweakable. There's also IK's new Stomp IO unit that negates the need for laptop as it's all built in. Looks like it could be fantastic, but with any of these systems, I'm not sure I could trust a software based system to be stable enough!
PS the V-Bass
AFAIK can be used as a multi-fx bypassing the hex p/up for guitar modelling, so is still a viable option.
