I reconsider this topic, I would still be happy with just an EQ. A nice parametric EQ like the WMD or Correct Sound unit. I like the natural growl and tone of my Gretsch.

If you have an active 3 band bass already, what benefit does an EQ pedal give?

Aguilar ToneHammer DI. Great clean tone and a click away from grit or distortion with proper setup and its a good sounding DI for FOH.

Finer-grain control.

The MXR M-108 10-band EQ gives you a greater level of control than a 2-knob EQ on an active bass. EQing can be more than just for your specific tone, but if the room you are playing has weird sonic properties, you might be able to tweak the right frequencies to reduce boom, squeal, etc.

Fishman Powerchord FX pedal. Great for a 4 piece band with one guitarist. Fills in rhythms nicely when the guitarist goes off to do a lead, or if you just want that extra punch. It has two outputs - one to the bass amp and the other you can send to a guitar amp (or you can just send everything to the bass amp). It sounds like I'm playing two instruments at the same time. And I don't have to hire another guitarist, which means more gig money for everyone else!!!

DOD Octoplus. Other things have come and gone but I really enjoy that pedal, once in awhile.

I'd get a midi controller and then load up on rack gear.

Since I bought my Xerograph over two years ago the essential combination on my board has always been OC-2-->Chunk Brown Dog --> Xerograph w/ expression pedal.

I can swap out the Brown Dog for the Oxide (or even another fuzz) but the OC-2 and Xero are crucial. As I said earlier in the thread, if I had to pick just one it would be the OC-2 for the funky tone with the dry an -1 blended as well as the electronica tone of the -1 octave soloed.

But really the minimum I'd ever really use (if I was using effects) would be those three, OC-2, Brown Dog and Xero.
