...any recommendations?
I tried the Boss and the Deluxe Mistress today. The Boss was OK but the EHX blew it out the water. I'm not sure I need anything that big though. I've read that the MXR sounds good on bass. Any thoughts on this and any other good ones out there?
Thanks |

It supposedly only affected the high end but I didn't care for it. It(the Boss)is highly regarded by some though.

Given that vintage A/D/A Jet's are basically un-obtanium - For bass guitar use the Choral Flange is the hottie for me. I just sent a Maxon FL-01 out for evaluation - to my ear it was better than the MXR. The MXR was next in line though. The Boss seemed kind of generic... not terrible just not exciting.
I don't have a lot of Boss pedal experience. I had their flanger and recently snagged Super Chorus for my guitar rig. It strikes me the same way. not terrible, not exciting.
If you're serious about your flanging - the Choral Flange is one you should mess with in spite of the price tag.

They are probably a little more money than some other flangers but they sound great. I have the EVH (Eddie Van Halen) model. The difference between the 2 pedals is that the EVH has a button to get that "Unchained' sound. Maybe you don't need that.
The MXR does a great 747 swoosh.

| | | | Thanks for your input guys.
I tried the MXR and the Fulltone (couldn't find the Maxon anywere). Yeah, the Fulltone was nice if a little clean sounding and also a bit too expensive. I really liked the MXR. Sounded great on the fretless. I'ts looking like the MXR at the moment. I'm not sure about that two battery thing though. Do they REALLY need to do that? |

On a related note... if you're looking in the EHX direction, I'd recommend the Stereo Electric Mistress (the small, new Mistress) over the Deluxe. 9VDC, compact, easy to use, awesome parallel chorus and flanger (you can dial out either one or mix them both), and noise-free.
In general, the Mistress flangers have a sound of their own, very different than Boss, MXR, and Maxon.

Both were super cheap, but pretty darn good for the money. You can push the Dano surprisingly hard; to the point where it wigs out a little with regen pushed all the way.
That said, MXR and EHX are pretty much the undisputed kings of flange. Try for a head to head if you can. Were it me, I'd take the EHX because of its ability to do stationary flange ("filter matrix"). |

The EHX Stereo mistress was cool but I wanted just a flanger and just a chorus, so I got the MIJ BF-2. We just got a Boss Hi-band Flanger HF-2 MIJ in my job and it sounds pretty good as well. |
