Im having the hardest time picking what fuzz I want

Sign in to disble this ad
Been ALL over the internet listening to clips and researching and been to many stores demoing etc etc etc, and I still cant decide what I want. Heres what Ive narrowed down to:

EHX Bass Big Muff
Earthbound Supercollider
ZVex Mastotron
Way Huge Swollen Pickle
Small Sound Big Sound Team_Awesome Fuzz Machine
Wounded Paw Attack Goat
Wounded Paw Battering Ram
Audio Monk Fuzzbeard
Audio Monk Fuzz Potion

I want a fuzz that sounds really warm, retains low end, and sits in a mix well.

What do you guys think I should get?

Ive been fiddling with the Wayhuge Swollen Pickle now for a couple months, by myself and in a band....< That sentance just seems wrong, anyway, I think it cuts through a three piece band well and the lows, personally I think they could knock your house over. I guess you can say WAYhuge, in your face!!!

I just bought a EHX Bass Big Muff, and i gotta say its incredible.

While i was trying it out at L&M about 5 other bassists came over and asked me what i was using to get that wicked fuzz sound. So i don't know if that helps

its not on your list but, IMO "the" fuzz for a warm low-end happy sound is the chunk systems brown dog. its also real versatile, it can sizzle and get crazy, but on mild settings its exactly what you describe.

Ive been eyeballing it too but the price tag is a bit steep. Maybe Ill save some more pennies for it

I had a Bass Muff and liked it, and I love my Mastotron. They have very different sounds, though. I think there are a lot more sounds to be discovered in a mastotron, but I did enjoy the very particular fuzz of the muff.

I guess by warm I mean strong mids and not a lot of treble

I think you said it well here. I have a bass muff and I love it, but I think of it as a 1 trick pony. It does one specific thing, and does it very well, but I wouldn't call it versatile.

And let me throw in a vote for the Malekko Heavy Industries B:assmaster if you want warm and fuzzy, it's the bass fuzz you hear on the Silversun Pickups albums, at least according to an interview I was reading

Get the mastotron. It can go from very classic fuzz sounds to gated goodness.

For me its the Muff sound with more mids and growl. (Biggest example being Anesthesia)
The really scooped sound with a lot of boom and sizzle sounds like bass synth to me.(Biggest example being Time is Running Out.) The Woolly Mammoth and the B:assmaster seem to be more along those lines.

Sound is in the ear of the beholder, but my preference is for the warmer fuzz.

EDIT: What something sounds like on record or on the internet can be very different than in person. Someone said they thought the B:assmaster was warm, but the internet clips I've heard makes it sound scooped and synthy. I guess you never know until you try it (which is an expensive habit to get into.)

I think if you want muff with mid control the Musket, Earthbound Supercollider or the Way Huge Swollen Pickle are the way to go.

Personally I will not recommend the BBM for anything other then light fuzz uses. I find it is good for lo-fi fur sounds but as for full on muffage I found it a big letdown. I know others will disagree and that is fine but out of the three muffs I have right now[I'm getting a forth muffiant soon] it just doesn't cut it.

welcome to the club. the musket is fantastic. I'm re-gassing for it. Apparently v2 has been tweaked with more mids control lol

So it does sound good on bass? The demo was guitar and sounded great, but we all know what sounds great on guitar doesnt always transfer over to the deep end.

Thanks for pointing it out and sharing though

Yes. It's fantastic on bass. It's my second favorite fuzz sound. Well maybe it's first? Since it is a muff-based. And my favorite is the Green Russian muff

Now I haven't compared the Supercollider with the Musket. You'd probably get similar sounds. I have no idea though. The Musket has no wait, and it seems to have more tweakability
