But, what would be the best way to approach emulating this tone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-O2qCPwXDI

I was thinking a SansAmp RPM or something. In the recording he's running an SVT-II through a Sunn 4x12 cab. Thanks.

Sounds like a P-bass with either flats or pretty dead round, dropped a step or so, played with a pick. The drive is pretty mild. I would bet you could get close with a VT.

These questions pop up a lot with tones that sound like that. It's usually the result of blending and/or studio help. However, the VT is probably the best bet for burly distortion and not fizz.

You almost hit that one right on the nose x]

It's an SVT-II through a Sunn 4x12 cab with a `62 P bass with worn Rotosounds in CGCG tuning.

You think I could get closer with a VT than an RPM? When I had my RBI I thought it had more of a smooth round OD, but I've never tried a VT, so..

I haven't had much experience with the RPM, but I'm pretty sure a VT would get you about 95% there.
