Impossible To Possible

Sign in to disble this ad
hi there, i am new to this forum and i would like to start a challenge! i recently came up again to this marvellous the who conzert from 1989 doing tommy live. i know its john entwistle, he was the ox, he had his special bass, he had the strings behind the neck, he did biamping his basssound and it is absolutly impossible to recreate his basssound as of course it did come from his fingers and his genius but who cares !

i went through a lot of forums but never found a real aproach to recreate some of his sound. so i wonder if someone would like to do it. as i use my pc as my multieffectsparadise and i am dealing with amplitube svt and guitarrig i think it should be possible to at least create something nice.

for me as a start the preset of amplitube svt called "chorus direct slap" is a nice start. and i would like to start some discussion on comression and chorus/flanger at this time. what do you think?

later we could make our mind up discussing the mid-range tone of john which i think is pretty outstanding.

then lets try some setups with biamping either in guitarrig or with two channels in our DAW.

now, all you bored bassplayers out there put on some new strings ( i use ddario EPS170 super brights by the way) and get mad. i am looking to hear from you! have a nice day!

if you have a look at my youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/TheMPloc and watch the TheMPloc SSB4 video from 1:40 you can hear the ""chorus direct slap" preset which i take as my start in creating johns sound.

That sounds pretty good! I love the concert DVD from 1989's Tommy reunion tour.

I think he was running a clean channel with just the bass and lower mids in addition to the chorus'd full range; at least that's what I believe I hear. He certainly wasn't using the saturated distortion he was just a few years later for the Quadrophenia revival tour.

thanx for your input. i also do think that most of the sounds from 1989 dont have this much of distortion so i decided to start with a little fuzz in guitarrig. i did split the channels using an equaliser. from my opinion my first try needs more punch and i am not soo happy with something in the midrange of the tone. but so far i do like it. going further from this tone i will try to make my mind up on create some variations in the chorus settins and also test some flanging.

my second setting will be something with distortion as i hear this quadrophenia-tone in some songs of the 1989 concert aswell.

if you have any ideas to share please do and have a nice day.

Good rule of thumb is one signal set up like a guitar, the other set up as a bass....

Update

hi everybody! this is an update on how i´m going through the John Entwistle Soundalike project. regarding to the who´s tommy concert of 1989 i tried to create the nasty sounding distortion tone which the OX used on some passages of the concert.
aswell as i am quite happy with the sound so far i see this as a startpoint. of course i have a audiosample again for all you millions of visitors of this thread it is very badly played but gives you the impression.

http://www.eMPe.at/Entwistle/TheMPloc Entwistle 002.mp3

first you hear the chorus tone which i already explained the last days. then (00:38) you get the nasty distortion sound. 1:03 next both sounds making me mad a little. i found out that with both sounds on my bass starts to feel different to play what is quite a sensation for me.
(2:00) the last part is more ore less the same, with picking (4:36) and three fat chord at the end.

again, i hope for your inputs, thoughts and tips. have a nice day!

Sounds awesome. His tone with those Warwicks was definitely a little 'edgier' than with the Status Buzzards. Status basses are so hi-fi and very clean sounding, even played with his signature "percussive" technique.

I have a Status neck and it is almost frictionless it's so smooth and fast to play. Perfectly even tone and intonation, too. Status is definitely an instrument I'd recommend.

well i have a buzzard 2 (status, wood bodied one. not buzzard 1 shape), given the right settings on amp/effects you get that toppy bite and big low mid growl almost with out trying

playability wise, its soo easy to play. the neck is super smooth on your palm and the action was set soooo low its rediculously easy to play fast. i am a 5 string guy at heart but i zip all over without a problem on the B2.

i use a bass pod or a pod x3 (i have both, prfer the x3 for bi amp ) ill knock up a quick sample in a day or two of my JE patch with info on settings etc
