Connecting you iPad/ iPod to the effect return or to the mp3/ AUX on you bass combo will sound great, most likely better then the bass combo sounds like.
I run my Ibanez bass combo connected (through the mp3/ AUX in, so bypassing the internal preamp) directly to my iPad headphone socket without a DI or such. I tell you something my combo do not sound like a Ibanez, it sound like something else. MY tone which I'll not trade away.
There are several ways of connecting our iOS device to an external speaker. If you connect directly to the PA through the main board/ mixer or directly into a power amp, well this two cases are different.
The best way I to have a DI between your iOS device and the mixer/ main board, and if you want to drive a power amp you should also use a mic preamp.
I connected my iPad directly into the main board/ mixer without a DI or a such in between, the sound was just fine. But you will have even better tone if you follow Steve R "tech notes".

I think I am going to give it a shot and just hope for the best. |

I planned on using the band EQ at just neutral across the board and let the tone be handled entirely by JamUp. |

I frequently run Jamup into the front end of my amp,and the only thing that's ever an issue is having to adjust the high end. It can be a bit too trebly due to the extra EQ section, so sometimes it take some adjustment.
It's not a bad tone at all, just be ready to ignore your eyes and EQ with your ears!! |

That's what the fellas here are using (and it's the bulk of discussion within this thread!): AudioBus is the middle man, JamUp is the amp-sim, and MTDAW is the recorder - more or less. This is the simplified, quick answer...until someone can give something more of a right/ complete answer.
Check out what MTDAW can do for you: I believe the 'stock' paid program will do 8 tracks and you can upgrade it for more, if needs be.

It's a DM1 created drum pattern, running as a loop in Loopy.
The keys are Sunrizer XS.
The bass is my P-bass through Jamup
Recorded in MTDAW. |

| | | Have some questions about specific types of sounds on JamUp. Should I ask here or better to start a new post? Didn't want to dirty up the post with something that may or may not be relevant |

Check out what MTDAW can do for you: I believe the 'stock' paid program will do 8 tracks and you can upgrade it for more, if needs be. | There are some more powerful recorders then MT DAW such as Auria, but Auria is expensive, and from what I read in the web site you must buy Jamup within Auria as a plugin in order to make Jamup an internal module of Auria. As far as one must do that and the fact that Auria do not support Audiobus, well MT DAW is the clear winner for us Jamup users. |

| | | | In JamUp what amp, settings, and effects do you guys recommend for a tight funk type sound. I don't do slap but I love the real tight, punchy funk tones. I'm having a hard time dialing one in. |

Here's my "starting" setting. I usually just keep it as close to flat as possible, and cut the treble because my bass is a passive P and can get too bright if you're not careful.
With flats, the treble cut results in a super funky fingerstyle tone. My favorite setting, actually. |

What I mean is that I've stored a separate bank for when I use headphones in the living room, than the presets for when I'm cranking through the PA. |
