It would be helpful to some of us who are ignorant of all things Apple if someone could give us an idea of the realistic minimum hardware and iOS requirements for some of the more popular functions. I know that you can usually look up the minimum requirements for an individual piece of hardware or software, but I know from experience that those don't necessarily apply to real world situations where you might have multiple apps running, etc.
For instance: My wife has an iPad 32Gb running iOS 4.3. It looks like I can upgrade the OS to ver. 5 without a problem (she doesn't have anything loaded on it that would need to be backed up), but will 32Gb be sufficient for use as a basic practice tool, playing with effects & amp modeling and some simple looping and recording?
I've got enough left in my bass funds to start with an Apogee Jam interface and a few of the essential apps & upgrades, but I'm not in a hurry and if there are betters choices on the horizon, I can wait. Should I dive in or would you suggest waiting for the release of the new iWhatever? I tend to shy away from brand new devices until I know that the bugs have been wrung out, but does that thinking apply in the iOS world too?

Edit: Just to further prove my ignorance, am I correct in thinking that if I have an interface plugged into the 30 pin connector, I will have to run the iPad on battery power, or is there a way to run off of external power and use a device on the 30 pin port at the same time?

Minimum is iPad 1 or iPhone 4. For Audiobus stuff recommended iPad 2 or iPhone 4S.
So that is in my eyes the absolute minimum and recommended minimum.

iPad 1 and iPhone/ iPod 4 are single A4 CPU. iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad mini are dual A4 CPU.

Not a dumb question at all.

But the answer is no, because stereo sound doesn't go "through" the Apogee in the first place. The Jam has no playback capabilities at all. It's simplest to think of it as the digital equivalent of the input jack on a bass amp. It's strictly a mono input, bringing the signal from a guitar, bass, keyboard or ??? into the iDevice. Once your signal is coded and handed off to the iDevice, the Jam's job is done.

If you want audio out from your iDevice when the Jam is connected (stereo or mono), you'll have to use the iDevice's built-in headphone output.

In contrast, the Focusrite has full-featured stereo outputs, driven by an independent internal DAC inside the iTrack. That enables it to take over playback duties, bypassing the iDevice's headphone amplifier altogether.

Now they just need an iPhone compatible version of the itrack. I love the Jam, but it would be great if I could get digital out as well.

Anyhow. I'm digging the full version of amplitube, and the drum thing is stupid simple to create songs with. I'll chime in if anything out of the ordinary happens. Hope to start posting some work I'm doing with this stuff soon.
Great to hear joe..... I also really enjoyed the time I spent with AT. If only they would get rid of the inherent hiss in there amp sims. I would go back to it. Lord knows I've put enough money into it.....I was not happy with the drum section the good part is that it's maneuverable in the sense that you can build a song pretty easy. The bad part is the no editable portion of the loops themselves and......the cost!!!!!!!!!
To quote a friend of mine.....Wow just wow
The dual showman is an excellent sounding bass amp. If it weren't for that infuriating hiss. It's so minimal......but there!!!!!!!

You can layout each of the different loops in a timeline multiple times into however long the song you want to write and change the bpm but you can't change the loop itself. it sounds great for the free one they give but it very limiting. also, I'm not sure of this because I have only the one genre, but I don't think you can mix genre's beats either.

Minimal, but add a fuzz or OD pedal and it sound like the old iRig. One do not need to emulate the hiss of old mic'd amps, what be the next thing? Emulated weight?

16GB IDevice or 8GB or 64GB that is not the deciding factor necessarily. The real factor is the processor in the IDevice. Duke cleared that up a bit. The 8/16/32/64 GB is how big of a "hard drive" it has (how many songs and pictures and such it will hold). The processor A4/dual A4/A5/A6 is how powerful the "brain" of the device is (how much computing and multitasking it can do)

Wait, really?
Which iPhone and which itrack device?

At one point, Duke21 did a test of the iTrack Solo and his iPhone and it was a no go.

Dang, I may have to look into getting one. Having the extra outputs is a real plus.
