For example, can you put music applications on an iPad like sample players or full fledged recording apps such as Digital Performer, Cubase and Logic?
And what does it have in the way of output devices for playing back sound externally?
If you're using amp modelers that can be output to the effects loop of a real amp, how is that signal transferred?
Maybe it would be simpler to ask, what can you not do on an iPad that you can do on a computer as far as music goes?

To answer your recording apps question is yes quite a number of apps that deal with recording and samplers and such.

I went to the Apple website and they don't explain much about music capabilities except to tell you how to move files from iTunes.
Specifically, it would be nice to be able to put Digital Performer on it (which I have) or Garage Band (which I guess you could get) and a sample player such as Kontakt. Then it could be used to record audio and midi and trigger sampled sounds (and I have a huge library of those).
While I'm dreaming, I'd like to be able to run an external keyboard via midi and trigger other samples for live performance. I would split the keyboard so that I can play both bass and other instruments at the same time.
And finally it would be great to be able to use it as a signal processor for looping, effects and high-end tonal coloring. And I use the term coloring in a positive light. Once you experience high end EQ you'll see that they all have tonal characteristics and running through a Pultec is different from a Neve although both are great.
All of these things are things that I have done on my Mac G4, which now unfortunately is out of date and needs to be upgraded. So I'm weighing options looking for the least expensive and most portable way to go.

I'd suggest taking a look at Sunrizer for your synth, definitely Loopy, and maybe give Multitrack DAW a shot as well. This should get you started.
Read up on what Audiobus is and what it does, and a new world will open up to you. |

I use Genius Scan to convert paper scores to PDF, put them in DropBox and then open them in GigBook. Prior to the latest update page turns were really slow with GigBook and I felt like I was settling. But in the latest update page turns are now very quick. I'll give it 5 stars.
My dream for the iPad is Korg coming up with a Korg M1 synth emulator. |

Also, and sorry for the extremely basic question, what exactly is a DI box? A SansAmp? And if I had one, could I plug the iPad into it, and then the DI box out to any cab?
Thanks! |

I started a thread a few weeks ago asking which would be the best for our particular situation, and the general consensus was that the Radial AV1 would be the one best suited, though many would work just fine. |

[/quote]Also, and sorry for the extremely basic question, what exactly is a DI box?[ /QUOTE]
I'm certain someone will give a more accurate description of a DI, but in laymans terms, it basically takes your instrument level signal and makes it line level, or in other words, capable of pushing a power amp.

Yes, but you would need to iPad>DI>some sort of power amp>and then to a cab.

Instead of using an amp, you could plug into a DI box that went straight to the recording console. Nowadays, they have that feature built into the amplifiers so when you play live you can run directly into the P.A. without having to use a mic on your cabinet (which picks up extra noise). And some people have taken it a step further and use the box version live without amp and cabinet and rely on house monitors to hear themselves.

Firt time I'd fired up Jam Up since I bought it. Pretty cool though I was playing guitar not bass. Guess I need to hit the Jamup Store for the bass pack, and some other guitar amp models and some effects and a looper and DAW... Pretty cool. Totally smokes iRig as most everybody else knows :-)

I got iElectribe,iMS20, AniMoog, Filtatron, FunkBox, AudioBus, MultiTrack DAW, GlitchBreaks, LoopyHD, SAMPLR, DM1, and Rhythm Studio.
I messed around and made a 3 track recording, Audiobus is so cool, and it was very easy to do.
As of now I am not worried about the amp emulator stuff. I need to get an interface though, one that does audio in and out, midi in and out. |

Here's a tip:
If you build a beat in DM1, but want to use it in Loopy, you hit a problem. DM1 doesn't support Audiobus.
To get around this, go to the Tools tab in DM1, and hit Export. It'll bring up the option of using Audiocopy. From this menu you can export it to Loopy.
Funkbox is also a drum machine of a slightly different flavor. It DOES support Audiobus so adding loops is easy. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
