iPad into bass cab without amplifier?

I have an iRiffport, which allows me to plug my iPad into a guitar or bass amp. However, I plugged into an old cab I have and nothing happened.

I guess I'm trying to determine if it's possible to just plug the iPad into a cab or if you need an amp to make it work.

Or, my cab could have a loose wire.

Your Ipad doesn't have enough juice to power the cab. You'll need an amp of some sort.
