BDDI and Redhead

Btw, here are two additional clips I recorded yesterday just to see how placement of the BDDI effect the tone, thus before the amp or after:

Any recommendations on a stomp pedal to engage/disengage the iPad? I tried my loooper - with the Apogee Jam/JamUp in the effects send/receive path, but when engaged, I get a noticeable high-pitched noise. Not sure if it's interference or too strong of a signal, or what. I don't get any noise listening to the headphone out of the iPad. Seems to be introduced by the loooper.

Looking for true bypass, which would give me 'just bass' most of the time. And, allow me to add in the JamUp effects when needed. 2-channel input would be nice too. Which is what the loooper gives me, so I was bummed when I got the noise. You can remove all effects/amps from the JamUp signal chain, but it doesn't sound like true bypass. Thanks.

Does your looper work with other pedals in the loop? Sounds like it's a problem with that specific looper rather than the iPad. Perhaps try a different one?

The only two I know of are the IK Multimedia iRig Stomp and Griffin makes an assignable footswitch. A quick glance and I don't see anything about true bypass. Also, not sure if the iRig Stomp works with apps other than Amplitube (the iRig connector does, so maybe?), but it looks like the Griffin is specific to Jamup.

I'm kind of cheesed off at the moment.

I've been using my iPhone 4S with an iRiffPort, PocketGK and AmpliTube with no issues - everything works great. SWMBO bought me a new iPad 4 for the holidays and I picked up generic 30 pin to Lightning adapters off eBay - one block, one cabled. The Apple adapters are $30 and $40, the generics were $10 each. I've had good luck with generic Apple stuff in the past.

No audio.

Now I get to try and troubleshoot - is it the generic adapters or the iPad? Luckily one of my coworkers has genuine Apple adapters so I can try and rule that out. My money is on the generic adapters.

Grrrrr.

I had a generic adaptor that came with a setup to let me charge iPod and iPad on the car's lighter or from a wall socket. That adaptor would only charge, it would not pass data when I tried with my computer.

That said, the audio quality is atrocious. The last time I heard thin-sounding preamps with such low headroom, I was using a Tascam Portastudio, and recording to 4-track cassette... And even the Portastudio (this would have been very early '80's) had better headphone amps.
Me and my friends did jam together in my living room. Nobody had amps with them. I used my Sansamps/ pedals, the guitar player used my iPad with Amplitube, the keyboard player, well he used his own tones. I've connected all of us to my 4 channel mini mixer in order to mix the band together, send the mixed sound to my 4 channel headphone amp so each of us could adjust the volume to his taste. Worked perfectly fine and cost less then the JamHub. Actually under half the sum of the JamHub.
Examples of us jamming together (recorded in Audacity on my laptop) can be found in this set:

Btw, most ideas are not rehearsed, thus played 1-2 before we tried to record it. So basically it is a "live jam"...

Forget about any kind of pedal. All pedals still use the headphone socket which results noise and bad tone. When they come with a 30pin interface pedal, then we can talk.

This is the most serious solution I've seen so far and 30pin interface). Looks great, but the weak part is that the software for this pedal is aimed at.... guitar players. No bass amps or what so ever in there. I bet I can get a nice tone from the JCM 800 or one of the other guitar heads in there, but no dedicated bass stuff.

I've posted this on the "Amplitube, Ampkit and GK app, a kind of a review" but it is worth to post it here as well:
"Hello iOS emulsion app users.
Since I've started this thread a long time ago lots of stuff have changed. I'll just give a very short update as lots of stuff can be said and written.

So, there is a new kid in town (regarding bass gear) and the name is Jamup XT Pro from Positive Grid. This kid (hte XT version with the bass pack) was born in the summer of 2012 and offered the very first bass pack for us bass players. But, as any new software or product the very first version was not the most impressive out there regarding tone. But 2-3 weeks ago there have been some "minor bug fixes" in this software which turned out to be MAJOR tone upgrade. Jamup is now on the par with the current king of tone, thus Amplitube iOS from IK multimedia. IK Multimedia was kind enough to give out the B15R which is was a huge improvement comparing to the original bass head. It is the very first dedicated bass gear to be released from IK since the very start. While the B15R is VERY impressive, the time it took IK multimedia to release this amp was not so... impressive. In the same amount of time Ampeg have released the PF350, PF500, SVT 7Pro, SVT 8Pro, the Mico VR and the Micro CL.....
While all in all Amplitube iOS is maybe (to this date exactly) the best all in all solution for us bass players, today 10 dec. 2012 is the day of days. Positive Grid released just an other update which support AudioBus which means Amplitube domination is about to end. Not only Jamup bass pack gives us legendary amps such as the B15 1969/1966, SWR Redhead, GK 800RB, Ampeg SVT Blue line and the beautiful Sansamp BDDI but now Jamup can be hooked with Audiobus to a recorder such as the Multitrack DAW, NLogSynth etc. Live!
Positive Grid seem also to be actually interested in us bass players and are following The Virtual Official JamUp Bass group on Soundcloud, started by us.
IK multimedia on the over side delete out posts on the IK multimedia if they are not really "good" posts. Way to go to treat you customers IK you really show us the it is "The musician first".
We show interest in your product and defended you in various debates for not being as good as hardware gear, you really show us appreciation!

Sorry in all of this that I didn't mention Ampkit which did great by releasing the Trace Eliot and Ashdown amps. Ampkit do quite well, and now you can get the Ampkit app for Mac for a ridiculous low amount of money!! For 350 NKr you get ALL the inn app gear. Totally worth it if you dig the Ashdown or the Trace tone.
The GK app is about the same as it was, thus a bit hissy, but still a great value and not to forget the GK tone."

Thanks for the info, Duke21. How do you recommend using JamUp (or any iPad effects solution) in a live setting without any effects enabled? looking for true bypass? The 'effects out' is still the stereo mini plug from the iPad.

Yup, the generic adapters were the problem - a genuine Apple 30 pin to Lightning cable did the trick. So much for trying to save a few bucks on overpriced accessories.

Amplitube has power switches on the amplifiers. JamUp allows you to pull the amp out of the signal chain. Garage band lets you use the straight audio input as an "instrument".

Of course, everything is getting digitized and reconstituted through the iPad, and with most software and an Apogee Jam, it's also going through 24-to-16bit down conversion. Hardly true bypass, and it can be tricky to get enough level without the gain from an amp sim...

I've been looking at interfaces over the weekend, and found that on the input side, the Jam is almost indistinguishable from more expensive hardware. I used my older MacBook Core 2 Duo, so I could separate the input and output paths.

However, the iPad headphone amp is far from stellar. Ranked in order of how the output stages sounded, from best to worst:
- Amplitube 3/OS X 10.6.8, Mackie Blackjack monitor output
- Amplitube 3/OS X 10.6.8, Tascam US-800 monitor output
- Amplitube 3/OS X 10.6.8, Mackbook headphone jack
- Amplitube for iPad/IOS 6.0.1, Tascam US-800 monitor output.
- Amplitube for iPad/IOS 6.0.1, iPad 2 headphone jack

There were three takeaways from this process, at least for me:
- I couldn't get the Mackie to work with my iPad, probably because my cheap generic USB hub couldn't provide the needed 500ma
- If you're looking for that last 10% of audio quality, you need external D/A and a real line-level output
- Amplitube for IOS simply doesn't sound as good as the Mac version, even with identical hardware

How I use JU, AT or Ampkit totally depends on what the app offer. On AT which I've used over the longest period of time I tried a lot of stuff, but usually like with real hardware the best solution is the one which gives you your tone with minimum amount of virtual gear connected. So usually only an amp or an amp with one or two effect connected together. On AT it is the B15R alone or with the Møller if I need more hair and sometimes with the envelope filter engaged and used as kind of a EQ/filter thus not as auto wag or something.
On JU, so far, it will be an amp alone or with a OD engaged as well. The SVT Blue seem to have enough grit and OD on its own, other amps such as the Redhead or the B15 need a bit help from the BDDI if I want more grit out of my tone.
I never use JU or AT as "true bypass", if I do not need the app for the tone I will not run it. Except, I do sometimes run AT without effects or amp emulation on because I only use the 8 track recorder when I use my Sansamps and real hardware stomp boxes.
I did dry combine real stomp boxes with AT emulation, for example my Sansamp Oxford with the B15R. The result was surprising good. But I will use this option only if I miss something within the app.
So basically, use JU with the simulation on, thus use the amps and effects as you wish in order to get your tone. Try to use minimize you china of tone, and do not use noise gate if you really do not needs it!
Right now I am using the Apogee Jam which gives me excellent tone into the app, and the headphone socket to get the tone into my headphone amp or my "PA".
But I did order the iTrack so when I get it it will be A/D into the app and D/A out of the app all done by the DAC in other iTrack, so best tone possible. But do remember that good results are possible with the iRig if you are not a high gain maniac like me...

You know I've looked for this ART dual pre here in Norway didn't find it! So I've ordered the iTrack, which is more expensive...
Does the ART intended to use with iOS device regarding drivers or you just managed to make it work with you iPad?

It is a Mac/PC plug and play usb interface but with the apple CCK it works perfectly. What do you mean drivers? I've never had to load special drivers for iOS. As long as the interface is powered besides through USB because the 30 pin doesn't supply power. It's powered by a 9volt power plug or a 9volt battery just like an effect pedal. When it's plugged into a Mac/PC it's USB powered.

Yes, I know no need for drivers in iOS as there is a generic driver in iOS. What I've meant is that some powered USB devices do not work with iOS devices, some do. I do not know why some do not work. For instance the Focusrite 2i2 seem to not work unless one use a specific powered USB hub, thus not just any powered USB hub.

I'm probably being a bit dense here, but forgive me this question please, as I don't own any of this hardware yet besides an iPhone.

How is everything connected up to iPhone and bass so that you get output via something other than the iPhone headphone socket ?

Simple,
With iRig:
Bass- iRig- iPhone - i Rig - headphone/ headphone amp or PA with a decent quality stereo cable.
With Apogee Jam:
Bass - Apogee - iPhone - headphone socket - headphone/ headphone amp or PA

Right .... but there you're using the iPhone's headphone socket for both input and output, which I thought were both things to be avoided if possible.

Again you're using the iPhone's headphone socket for output, which Steve R is suggesting is sub-optimal.

I'm trying to understand how steve acheived this connectivity:
