JHS Morning Glory

I picked up a Morning Glory from JHS before Christmas but never really got around to doing much with it until recently. I've had two other JHS pedals that really didn't do it for me, but the Morning Glory is a really nice sounding pedal. I've been searching for that "little bit of break up" type sound but it seems like most pedals have that magic spot in such a narrow range, maybe between 2.3 and 2.5 on the gain knob for example. There was just too narrow of a range for adjustments to go from clean to various shades of low to mild overdrive. Enter the Morning Glory. About half of the gain knob is light overdrive and it progresses from almost clean through various shades of grit in a very pleasing manner. The key is to adjust the tone as you adjust the gain. Don't consider them to be independent knobs, if you adjust one you'll need to tweak the other.

Downsides? I guess price is one at $199 and the other is that on higher levels of gain it's noisy when you're not playing. So use a noise gate or turn it off when not playing. The filter switch helps out a lot especially if you're playing through a cab with a tweeter and you don't want a bunch of fizz.

It works for me and fills a role of the light overdrive that's very adjustable. It can get nasty too if you want by maxing out the controls, but I rarely use that. I just want that little extra musical push to drive the tone over the edge without getting too broken up. The Morning Glory does this well.

I like the 4 Wheeler. Best mammoth clone for actives ever.

Nice...I'll have to check on of those out. I have several guitar friends that use them.

I am getting ready to sell my JHS Low Ride....great pedal, but it just doesn't do it for me. I also use to own the 4 wheeler fuzz....very nice pedal too.

For me, the Low Ride had 90% of the gain knob where it sounds almost the same. I thought it sounded like a Boss MetalZone character-wise. But the Morning Glory is doing it for me.

I love the Morning Glory, and agree with everything that Cyber said - except the noise. Mine is dead silent!

This is the most natural "sound in my head" OD I've tried. After I got it I sold my Pork Loin, and my Phat Phuk B is super jealous (although still on my board).

That 4 Wheeler really has my attention. Seems to be the best mammoth clone available and even cheaper than the real deal mammoth.

I didn't like the Low Drive that much - too much gain too early on in the drive knob. That's just personal taste and not a ding on the pedal.

The Lime Aid didn't work out on notes below E. The fundamental of a low B completely disappeared. I sent it back twice and they checked it and said everything was good, but it still lost the low end. Shame as it was a very nice sounding, tone enhancing kind of compressor.

So cyber, you sold the MG right? It's been on my next-stop list for dirt for awhile. What made you decide to flip it?

JHS reportedly did some less than scrupulous activity when they were called out for copying a Deviever pedal. You can Google it to find the discussions. I've bought four JHS pedals over the past two or three years and I doubt I'll buy any more. They market well by putting the pedals on pedalboards of semi well-known artists and then blog about it. That along with their higher prices makes an illusion that they're making something special. Honestly, I've been disappointed with most of their pedals other than the Morning Glory. In the end, I sold it because it was too noisy with my setup. Now that I have an SVT 7, I'm just happy to turn up the gain and go with that overdrive. It's not all tube, but it sounds better than most pedals I've tried and the right blend of clean/gritty warmth.YMMV

Being in KC, we're lucky, because I can just go to the JHS shop whenever I want. That's usually bad for my wallet, though... really, really bad.

Nah I though they just blatantly rip off other pedal makers.

Yup, totally your fault.

Also, I can't seem to spell "Bluesbreaker" right. I must've written it 3 or 4 times today, and all came out as "Blesbraker". I just noticed now that the spelling in my previous post is wrong too

I WAS BEING CIRCUMSPECT.

let's just leave it at "they have questionable tactics in regards to their design and build practices"? that way anybody that wants to lean more can google away and this doesn't turn into the (inevitable) JHS/Bad Cloner slag-fest?

or not. slag-fests ARE pretty amusing sometimes.

That's because it is based off of the Bluesbreaker. Even says so on their website.
