Question Just getting into pedals... need help.

Sign in to disble this ad
Greetings!

Like the title says, I am just getting into bass effects and have bought myself some new toys for our prog rock sound. I am wondering what is the best way to order these pedals. I have only had them for a about a week, but here is how I have been playing them:

BASS-->TU-2 Tuner-->CE-5 Ensemble Chorus-->BF-3 Flanger--->Sansamp Programmable Bass Driver-->AMP

The reason I ask is that I cant seem to get any good tips online. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! rock on.

That's probably fine. Chorus and flanger are pretty similar effects, the sansamp you probably want last if you're using the DI out on it, but if you're using it as a distortion try it before the chorus and flanger - see if you like the sound of combining them that way. Generally speaking, adding effects to distortion produces more interesting results than adding distortion to other effects - distortion just covers up other stuff, whereas other stuff tends to colour or warp distortion.

Tuner first is always a good idea IMO.

Trial & error - that's the best way.

Some folks like their tuner last - The theory being that it will mute any noise from the FX when engaged. I don't roll that way (I do it the conventional way, tuner first) but I don't have that many FX.

The truth is, as a bassist, you don't need ANY pedals. You will sound just fine without chorus or flanger. A good tuner is pretty important, but the rest are just fun. I have several pedals but find that I use only two or three.

Another thought: A chorus & a flanger... I'd lose the flanger and get a octave for the prog thing... Me, my current setup is tuner > Chorus > distortion > octave > Envelope Filter > out. My last gig I only used the distortion on one tune, the envelope filter and octave on two tunes and the chorus on... maybe 1/3 of the tunes (4 set night). I could have used none of them and been just fine.

Another angle on the subject...

BASS--> TU-2 Tuner--> SansAmp--> CE-5 Ensemble Chorus--> BF-3 Flanger---> AMP.

Whaterver works

thanks, i think i will try the sansamp before the chorus and flanger. maybe prog rock is not the right genre. i have a hard time classifying us but we have the AIC side of us, and then the TOOL side. I deffinately dont have the effects on all the time, but they deffinately add to the parts i use them. Mostly for intros, breakdowns, or parts where its just bass and drums to give it a creepier feel.

i will look into a octaver and see if it would apply. i dont use the sansamp for distortion except in one song right now. mostly i use for a nice clean tone, and a more aggressive tone with a little crunch.

I am rockin a Ibanez EDA 905 5 string bass with a Laney 2x10, 1x15 cab and Peavey Mark IV (or is VI?). So i got the low and high end; just like the effects for dynamics. I have played in other bands with absolutely no effects and can say that the sansamp is a must. I want us (the band) to get into some more trippy/ambient stuff to throw in our set list too. I am looking at the EH Cathedral and the MoodySounds Mushroom Echo for that stuff.

Any other effects or ways to wire this monster? I appreciate the assistance. Thanks!

I think I am done and satisfied (for the moment) with effects. I bought my board that lights up from monkey dream (pics to follow after some modifications). Since my last post I have bought a few more toys but having trouble with the order. As far as I've read, the fuzz should go before the driver? Like:

Bass--> boss tu-2 tuner--> wah--> mxr el grande bass fuzz--> sansamp PBDDI--> boss CE5 chorus--> boss bf3 flanger--> tech 21 rvb boost reverb--> boss dd3 delay

I get alot of feedback when the fuzz is after the sansamp and really haven't tried the above setup yet. So the problem could e solved. Dunno.

Does this look ok to my fellow TBers? Should the fuzz go before the wah?

Feedback is your friend,...and I would go Fuzz-->Wah.

maybe how YOU play you don't need any effects. how i play would not work without effects. does that mean i'm not a bassist?
Knowing that BigOldHarry rocks a pedalboard with some fluffy effects softens the blow of his comment a bit I think.

The point he is trying to make is that there is a difference between "want" and "need". A vast majority of bassists will get by with a clean tone or a bit of tube amp OD. Hell Mecha Shiva could get by on a clean bass tone only,...but what fun is that.

My pedal board right now:

bass -> tuner -> compressor -> sansamp -> amp

I eventually want to get an envelope filter, and my order will be thus:

bass -> tuner -> filter -> compressor -> sansamp -> amp

I want the sansamp as a DI, so it's gonna go last. I want the filter before the compressor because I don't want the compressor to remove the very signal peaks which trigger the filter. But I guess we'll see when I get it.
