Keeley Compressors - some years better than others?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,
I have the opportunity to pick up a Keeley C4 Compressor in good condition, and read Bongomania's review (HUGE help) and based on the description, I think it'll suit my needs perfectly.

What I'm confused about with the Keeley though is that it seems at a certain point of time, they became alot better to use for bass.

Was this simply when they went with the 4 knob model over the 2 knob generally, or are more recent 4 knob models better than earlier 4 knob models (and if so, at one point would the improvements had been made)?

Any help from those in the know would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Clarence

As I understand it, the four-knob version did change recently, but it was all cosmetic/practical and nothing functional... I believe it received it's new name C4, the Trim knob was renamed Clipping, and maybe the direction you turn the Attack or Clipping knob was changed...? I can't remember on the last one. Anyway, it became a lot more useful for bass when he first introduced the four-knob version, because those controls were previously inside the unit, and so a lot more difficult to change. Hope that helps, and maybe someone who knows better can come by and clarify...

Thanks Brian ... VERY helpful. I find something like a compressor is hard to evaluate when playing without the full band mix, but being able to at least identify the newer model visually (even if there's no difference in functionality) is certainly valuable to me.
Cheers,
Clarence
