you mean stuff like the original mario brothers, pole position, pacman, or frogger etc.? great songs, cool sounds - and i'd guess computer synths of the era.

I'm pretty sure there's a pedal around that can make your bass sound like that. I think it's called an 8-bit distortion. I know I've seen it around here before.

They didn't use a keyboard for those sounds, it was synthesized on the videogame console itself. You can get a little MIDI device I think that hooks up to an NES to use its synthesizer to get those tones, or you could try a glitchy fuzz like the Blue Box which can kind of get such tones.

There's a Reason Refill on the Propellerheads website made completely out of NES sounds.

Look for anything from the Yamaha DX series of synths, albeit you'll have to search used. That'll get you close.

I think you're thinking of the sounds of the fabled Atari 2600 or the Commodore 64.
There's plenty of sample libraries available with those sounds, to use in your software sample playback device.
There's some free virtual synths out there too:

only for Windows, though (bah!)

You'll need a lot more than bit reduction and distortion, etc. to get a bass guitar to make those sounds if that's what you're after. Darn near impossible (unless you're triggering samples, then you could use any trigger device). Not to say you won't land on something ELSE cool trying though
