Korg AX300B vs. Korg AX3000B

Sign in to disble this ad
Yo I'm new to this forum but not to the bass world (just a bit slow). I'm trying to achieve a Claypool sound and have heard that he uses an AX300B (among others). I'm especially focused on getting that dirty envelope wah he's got (a number of songs on Antipop, Purple Onion, Of Whales and Woe). Is the AX300B worth searching for or should I go out and grab the newer one? (money isn't an issue)

PS-Is it true he uses that pedal or does he use a different one?

Sorry if this is a duplicate, the search function kinda stinks.

Thx

He uses it one at least one album I know of. I have a 3000 and find it very useful. Its a good unit, especially for the $195 they're charging for it new now.

He used to use the 300b but switched to the 3000b a couple of years ago. You should be fine with the 3000. Its all over Whales. I used to use the 300b and it took some programing but nailed all those wet envelope sounds. I had to goose the input gain to simulate the hot output of his EMG pickups/electronics to get the envelope to sound like that. And you have to feed it with the internal OD or distortion to maximize the effect. The 3000b is a great deal at $200.

I believe Les used/uses a SansAmp BassDriver/DI together with the Korg multi-fx to get those distortion tones.

Now, perhaps I don't want a multi effects board because it has lots of things I don't want. Does anyone know of any good envelope wah pedals that would sound just as good as the Korg??

The Korg Envelope doesn't work well in conjunction with external distortion. When he uses distortion type sounds where its just distortion he uses the Sansamp. But when he uses the distorted envelope sounds(or the distorted step phaser sounds he busts out from time to time) he uses the onboard Korg distortion. I say this from the perspective of having spent a good deal of time trying to cop some of the specific sounds with the gear involved. Try it for yourself and you'll see what I mean. And for something standalone to get similar envelope tones you should try to check out the Digitech Bass Synth Wah. Thats the closest I've found.

If I remember correctly I think that one was using the Access Virus Synth to process his bass sound. I think he mentioned it in Guitar World back when the album was released.
