Korg Monotron on Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anybody tried their bass with the new Korg Monotron yet? Its supposed to be the MS-20 filter in a handheld synth.

I've checked TB and Youtube, but can't find any videos with bass.

I don't think it's available anywhere yet. I pre-ordered one directly from Korg and they haven't shipped it yet.

Its been out in Japan for a few weeks, and it looks like some Europeans got a few during musikmesse based on the YouTube videos I've seen. Hopefully, they'll start shipping in the US in the next couple weeks.

I'll wait til someone gets their hands on one, rehouses it in a stompbox with 9v power, replaces the ribbon keyboard with a photosensitive eye that you can switch on or off as well as expression pedal control, and offers this service to others.

I think it would be fine for its intended audience, tabletop electronic musicians playing to chin-stroking, civilized audiences. It's not meant to go on a pedalboard and be stomped and have beer poured upon it (I personally feed bad for all the poor stompboxes that do have to put up with this treatment...).

I'd like to think this kind of stompbox abuse doesn't happen, but I'm pretty sure it has happened at least once on accident. This is why I play in churches, there's no beer to spill on my expensive pedals.

Personally I think it could be an awesome tool for filtering and such, dunno about live I am thinking more as a recording/mixing effect but it could be pretty neat in a loop. Plus it's pretty inexpensive looks like 60 bucks or so, U could have several.

It's pretty much a rehashed stylophone. Looks like fun.

Didn't you describe the Brain Freeze?

I am looking forward to this because it is cheap ($60 new) and tiny.

i just bought a monotron tonight. i need to get ahold of some adaptors but i bought it under the idea that i would be using it as a filter for bass. even as just a cool pocket-synth, this thing is really cool. i'll let you all know what i think of it once i have a chance to hook my bass through it.

Congrats! Can't wait to hear what you think about it. If you have the time, a quick YouTube vid or some sound clips would be amazing. Nobody has posted any bass demos yet.

The bit about it being an MS-20 is pure marketing bs.
There is no Highpass on the Monotron for a start, only a Lowpass.
I've had an MS-20 for 18 years and had a few plays on the Monotron at work.
They are by no means the same filter.
The Monotron might be a fun ickle toy, and good at making noises like you'd imagine a drowning cat would make, It could also be ok as a tool to filter external gear.

Some people think the new Roland Juno Di must be the same as a Juno 6/60 or 106, because of the name.

Exactly. This is why I am interested
In this box. A lowpass filter and LFO for 60 bucks. If it sounds decent, that is an amazing deal.

I wouldn't expect it to sound exactly like an MS-20, but if it can get some of the sound at a fraction of the size and price, I would love to have one.

Don't get me wrong, for the price I think it is cool.
The filter is quite good, and capable of some speaker ripping resonance if that floats your boat.
It's just not an MS-20 filter like they suggest.
The LFO has quite a wide range on it.
The Oscillator is pretty weak imho and it's a pity there is no Envelope.

I bought one last week to try it on bass and finally sold it the next day.

I tried it for 20 minutes at home with a few basses and the sound was always lo-fi, AM radio type. Nothing I could see myself actually use either onstage on in the studio.

What I get by combining different pedals sounds way better and is more flexible.

Still, for $60 you don't need to take my word on this; try one...

I only found it yesterday, but the thing is cool!!! now, if only i had an effects loop... and with the AUX in, you can plug the bass on it and do some really cool landscape/crazy funk/thing on it

When you turn it off does it bypass or cut the signal? Do you need to run a seperate loop in your pedal board for it?
