Had a good long search through the tb forums and couldn't find it.
I'm not much of a pedal man myself, nor one for big effects (I usually stick with subtle ones) but the tone in lakini's juice by Live is brutal and beautiful. I've got a Sansamp Bass driver DI which i generally use to get similar tones but it doesn't quite get there. Any better pedal ideas?
Thanks,

The Demeter pre is a bit more capable than the SansAmp BDDI, and he might have dialed a little sub-octave in there.
Also, keep in mind that they could have doubled or tripled his part, recorded multiple basses and re-processed his signal many times to get that ungodly tone in that song. |

PD: I know exactly what you mean. I heard it on the radio the other day, and I was thinking, Everything's so repetitive-that same guitar riff, that same bass line, that same drum pattern … it's as if there's nothing there. Yet it seems so big. I don't know how the hell we did it, but it sounds cool.
We were going out for dinner one night, and Taylor put this tape in. It was just that opening riff over and over again, and I started laughin' at him-you know, "What are you gonna do with this?" But then when we were recording the new record in Jamaica, he started to play the riff again. I had a little MXR overdrive in line, so I stomped on it and started in with that sliding drop part. We just looked at each other and thought, Man, that could be a song! Gracey came running into the room, and Ed-we couldn't even see him-started yelling into his microphone from the porch outside, "Holy s**t, keep playing!" It was wild. I had no idea that one silly riff could turn into what it did. | Found here: http://www.guitarplayer.com/article/...ve/jan-00/4566 |

What Demeter pre do you mean, and in what ways is it "more capable" than the BDDI? |

For one, his Fenders tend to stay home and/or in the studio; his tour basses are mostly Lakland I believe. For LJ he always uses a P and a pick near the bridge. He added a Fulltone Bass-Drive to his pedal setup two or three years ago, but he actually turns it *OFF* for LJ (It's on for most of their set to add that "extra fart" in his own words).
In short, I don't think a pedal is going to get you where you want to go-Seems the main ingredients are quite simply P-bass and pick and of course a good amp. |

I don't know what that box is. From the page I stole that picture from, it says that Pat uses the Demeter VTDB-2 tube direct box.
Two things:
1. I made an assumption that a Demeter Preamp would be a little more hi-fi (ie: capable) than the SansAmp BDDI for dialing in an ungodly tone.
2. I didn't look at the picture well enough before I spoke out of my butt.
My bad. |

Think it was a V6 - whoever has this post, bring it up!

The pedal shown there is a Roger Mayer Voodoo Bass, which is a distortion/fuzz. The Demeter DI is a larger square shaped box with no knobs on top. It's a "clean but warm" DI, so it would have a "nicer" clean smooth tone than the BDDI, but it would have none of the tone-shaping features, and it does not overdrive or anything like that. |

And if it's just a P-bass into a MXR overdrive, I'm curious to hear what his recording rig was. |

On stage, he plays LJ clean, or at least he doesn't use any distortion on his board. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
