Unhappy Lava cables / Boss LS-2 problems

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys..

I've just replaced my cheap patch cables with new Lava cables and have run into somewhat of a problem.

After I put my board back together, my LS-2 has begun to make a rather loud 'clicking' noise when I switch it on, or even
touch it with my foot.
I've taken the entire board apart and tested every cable one by one, by putting them between the LS-2 and a Pitchblack and came up empty. Every cable works and no clicks from the Line selector.

The problem solely occurs when I run the entire setup and only when I wire it up with Lava cables. I've also tested it with the old patch cables, but I still come up empty.

My chain is as following:

Pitchblack > Behringer BDDI > LS-2 > TC Electronic VBD > CE-5 > BF-2 > DD-6

LS-2: Send Loop A> EHX Bass Blogger > GE-7B > Return Loop A

I really hope someone will be able to help me, as the current problem renders my LS-2 useless.
I just can't understand that better cables can make the end result worse?

Sounds like a grounding issue. Possibly an intermittent ground in one of the cables plugged into the LS-2, or one of those cables' jacks making contact with another metal object when the pedal is moved slightly?

I was also suspecting grounding to be the cause, but considering that the individual cables has worked fine when I tested them using only two pedals, I find it hard to believe it's the cables themselves..

I'll try to wire it up one more time, taking great care to isolate every plug from any metal interferences, and we'll see what happens..

Thanks for the input scotch!

Lava cables can be a hassle to install. I know because my board is composed of 14 pedals. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully. I sometimes simply didn't have any cables work due to me installing them wrong. Like scotch isolate the cable from touching metals properly braid the copper shielding over the casing so that it doesn't any of the inner wires (if that makes any sense). Ask mark from lava if you have any cables. He's a great guy to deal with.

Do the pedals in the loop make the same clicking noise when you touch them or is it just the LS-2?

When you pull power to the pedals in the loop does the noise continue?

Doesn't the Blogger require an isolated power supply? The Fuel Tank isn't isolated.

Your cheap cables may not have had a ground or any sheilding in them. This makes your cables noisier, but they don't translate any grounding problems from one pedal to another.

I don't really know the answer to your problems I just thought I'd throw some troubleshooting starts your way.

It's only the LS-2 that makes the clicking noises, and I haven't really tried pulling the power on the pedals in the effects loop. I'll add that to my 'Things-to-try-out-list'.

The Blogger reqiures 200 mA, more than the Fueltank can deliever - which is why I run it on battery.

Unfortunately I haven't had the time to redo my board today - but tomorrow I'll have a go at it again, and we'll see what happens.

Thanks for the input guys - hopefully I'll be able to locate the problem, fix it, and be a happy effects camper once again.
If not - I'm selling the Lava cables. Too much of a hassle for saving som real estate on the board and getting custom cable lengths.
