LED Big Muff (Clip inside you junkies!)

Ok so this is the sound of a big muff that has been modded - moderately - but certainly modded

The biggest tone indicator here is the LEDs for clipping diodes AND there are only two - I completely removed the first pair of diodes (ala a tonebender)

The other changes are the clipping stage uses a BC184 tranny (lower hfe than stock, smoother) and the stage before the clipping stage uses one as well. I changed some resistors to lower gain overall but I kept the final tranny stage which really makes the muff - well sound like a muff.

The tone control uses values of my own so there is substantially more bass.

I'll be more than happy to detail this mod in full when I get a chance to go back and take note of everything I did.

My goal: to make a nice tight almost OD/ Distortion sounding fuzz for players that like to get busy.

I highly recommend you pull the first pair of clipping diodes and change the second pair to LEDs if you want to really tighten up your muff.

this may appeal to some - while others may hate how the muff loses its "all consuming" nature.

here's the clip (it's a craptastic recording as the cord is kind of screwed up so that's the scratching you hear - not the pedal.)

Nice. I liked lower gain settings.
What model did you mess around with.
Also...How do you moders know where the clipping is going on? I want to do this stuff I just don't know where to start. Well other my GGG Red Llama Clone.

Of all the things I want, it's a tighter muff.

I started with a Russian version.

my notes are forth coming.

Just one thing to know - the differences in the muff are minimal component wise and they give great tonal change.

IF you want to be a modder - I suggest learning the Muff circuit INSIDE AND OUT - it's a great start.

I really liked the first setting. Nice and tight without much gain. I can get my Bass Big Muff close to that with the gain way down.

I hear what you're going for but for Big Muffs, I prefer the wall of fuzz sound.

I totally hear you - I LOVE the huge wall of fuzz sound - but I also like to know - as a designer - that I can mod a box in either direction

my next goal will be to mod a muff to sound like a wooly mammoth. all gated and nasty but still REALLY full.
