Let's talk stereo...

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm overhauling my pedalboard and I'm thinking of setting up my modulation and time based effects to be stereo, going to 2 separate (clean) amps.

I'm thinking of going (all in stereo):

Modulaion -> Delay -> Delay -> Reverb -> Looper
  • Is anyone playing with a stereo pedal setup?
  • If you are, is it true stereo with stereo effects or parallel processing with 2 separate rigs?
  • Have you encountered any problems in the process of setting your rig up in stereo?

It's going to take a lot of planning (and money) but I think I'm going to go for it. Feel free to persuade/dissuade me .

Thanks all

It is going to be a massive pain in the arse. And malicious and grumpy FoH sound men in venues across Yorkshire are going to mix you down to one channel or leave half the signal out, because they are too busy ordering pizza and being useless ****tards to do their jobs properly.

I'm off before I get any deeper into reminiscing about all my least favourite sound men. I can feel the red mist descending already...

I have a stereo pedalboard, and LOVE to play with it through 2 seperate rigs,....at home. Anywhere else, jams, gigs, etc, it's one rig in mono. Way too much hassel for me, and too much trouble for the soundman. It does sound cool though, especially a stereo chorus.

Thanks for the input folks!

I know it's probably going to a pain for gigs . I think I'll go for it, even if it's just for playing with at home.

Oh and for the OP. I agree with most of what's been said, sounds cool but the hassle factor is pretty large.

I never have the time time or cables to do that setup live (imagine the look on the guitarist's face too!), however I once ran a T.C. Electronic chorus in stereo and placed the cabinets several feet apart. It sounded great and much better than mono. Nice for recording but too impractical for any gigs I do.

I think this is definitely the main thing that's holding me back.

It was my guitarist who suggested it at first so no problems there . I ignored it at first thinking it was a stupid idea but I'm starting to come round. I love the sound of my delays in stereo and I love stereo reverb. Delay is a major part of my sound so I think it might be worth the hassle.

There's only one way to find out .

TRI-SIGNAL

If you're a glutton for punishment, you could try a wet/dry/wet or "Tri" setup. It would involve a mono amp pushing dry signal to a central speaker cabinet and a stereo amp pushing a wet signal (time based) to two outer cabinets. In this setup the bass stays focused in the middle and the time based signal gets the separation it needs. You could also EQ the lows out of the wet signal and blend it in and out with a volume pedal. This would be great for recording or solo bass, but again I'd need a roady or two to help me set it up on a gig.

Ive run stereo for bass and guitar for the last 12 plus yrs. Even when its just a small amount of stereo reverb for room ambience it sounds fuller then mono. Main effects I run in stereo are reverb, chorus, delays.

The Looperlative as well- all 8 tracks are stereo and can be panned back and forth, etc.

I've run stereo setups at two different point. My pedals were just split between the two sides with an ABY, but my rack effects unit was true stereo and you can get some very unique stuff going on with that. I'm actually about to try stereo again using an Axe-FX, where all the effects can be true stereo.

I am just a hobbyist though, so I don't have to deal with the hardships of gigging with such a setup.

Stereo Effects

I run true Stereo effects and there is just no going back. I have changed amp setups over the years going to mono, but in the end my heart is in true stereo. I use rack effects and a 2 amp setup.

I can't find the proper thread for my question and this is about stereo loopers...so! I have a Digitech Jamman Stereo. I can't seem to get this thing to play loops loudly on my labtop, but it plays perfect while plug into an amp. Does anyone know how I can get better sound quality out of this thing for making sound clips and such?

My stereo noise rig sounds sick on my headphones. But, sadly, In order to amplify it I have to do 1 of the two:

1. a 1/4" stereo plug hooked to 2 1/4" mono plugs (separate channels) to go into whatever
2. Run everything in mono and then use the other stereo out on my mixer to make a feedback loop so I can make everything sound cool like I like it.

There is a 3rd way around this, but it is hard to do and tedious to set up.

If it's just for sound clips you could save the loop into the pedal and transfer the file from the Jamman to your computer. That's what I do for sound clips.

I had the same problem when plugging it directly into my computer though. The sound was terrible. Can't help you there.

So using a Memory Card versus plugging straight in would change the quality? Just trying to make sure I'm understanding. I currently have it plugged in and have exported a few clips, but they are really quiet.
