I am thinking about getting a limiter because it seems during a gig, notes on my D & G strings are not as loud as E & A. When I play by my self, there is an almost level sound. What do you guys suggest. I was thinking about something smaller that a rack mount but would also look at that.

+1 I use a DBX 1066 which is a compressor/limiter. It really helps with strings overpowering others. I would suggest not going heavy on the compression though. You do not want to kill your sustain or add unwanted noise to your rig.

when 2 strings aren't as loud as another pair...a compressor may be more useful...

IMO...a limiter is useful from the perspective of calming your signal a bit when you get a bit "over-amped" during a performance...I do tend to use a limiter during performance...my choice...a Behringer BL-100....does the job for me..

although I haven't used it in the last 4-5 months because of my Zoom B2.1u has a limiter and compressor built in...I'm seriously considering reinstating it into the head of the signal chain to give me a little bit more flexibility...
