Limiter as Booster

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All, im newbie with effects and was thinking of using a limiter after a chain of effects or effects processor.

The main idea would be to limit the overall chain of effects, but turn it off to get a booster effect.

What do you think of that? Would it work?

I tried that with a Boss LMB3 after Behringer BDI21 (Used as Amp modeler, not DI), it did sound good to me.

Also, I noticed that using Boss LMB-3 after my Amp Modeler, gets a bit of hiss (the Enhance knob is set as 10:00), what you think of adding a Noise Suppressor after the limiter?

To summarize:

Scenario 1:
Bass --> Amp Mod --> Limiter --> Amp

Scenario 2:
Bass --> Amp Mod --> Limiter --> Noise Suppressor --> Amp

I'm using that at home, not for gigs.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post.

I have the Boss LMB-3 you should turn off the enhance knob or just keep it slightly on or else you will get hiss. Read Bongo's reviews.
You can use the boost part even though there are probably better boosts out there.

Exactly, the "Enhance" should be off, or used only sparingly.

It sounds like you are saying you'd have the output of the limiter be the "lower" level, so the signal would be "boosted" when you switch the pedal off. That might work fine. You'd just use the input gain on the amp to bring your signal up to its louder "boosted" level, and then "cut" the signal by having the limiter's output level knob be lower than unity. It's an interesting approach.

If it wasn't for Bongo, I wouldn't even have known about that stupid "enhance" knob being a hiss generator, I would have thought I was doing something wrong.. Thanks Bongo!

One of the guitar players in my band had a pedal for years that was a simple passive volume cut. One dial, one switch, no power of any kind. He would set his amp and guitar to his level for soloing, and then dial the pedal down for a rhythm level, and switch it "off" for the solo (louder) level.

It is slightly turned on. I can't afford a real booster at the moment. Short money

I'm gonna try that out.
