Limiter Enhancer Opinions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm not a big effects guy - I usually find the sound I want with one of my basses and the right strings. However, I picked up the Boss bass Limiter Enhancer a few months back and I'm iffy on it. I thought it would add a neat sound to my (very) occassional slapping and popping. It didn't.

And there's the problem. I've run three basses through it. I've tried many settings. I've read the manual. But I don't actually *hear* a difference in sound. I know it's supposed to be subtle but I really don't hear it.

So I am thinking of selling it. But I've heard it's a must-have pedal. So...I'm turning to the TB community to get your thoughts and experiences.

And....go!

You don't hear a difference when you raise the enhancer??? It's a pretty obvious brightness boost.

As for the limiting, there is no difference in sound. It simply prevent clipping when something gets too loud. Play a loud snap, then hit the limiter -- you'll hear that it's more contained.

Right on. I wouldn't slap and pop without hitting my LMB-3.

That's what I expected. But I've run it with a Fender P Bass, a Schecter Stargazer and a Schecter Diamond 4 and not getting anything.

Could the pedal be busted? It was used in a batch of other pedals I bought.

What basses do you see change on? Based on your thoughts, I decided to drop all but the enhancer (and level, of course). I did here a brightness change to the P Bass. But it wasn't a sound that I can't get on my Stargazer. Fortunate for me, but it left me wondering if this is only a 'must-have' on certain basses.

The "enhancer" is just a mid-scoop, nothing more. You certainly can get a similar sound with a two-pickup bass or an active bass with EQ. That feature is utterly worthless unless you have a passive bass with an inherently middy tone (like a P).

The only part of the pedal that could be a "must have" for some people is the compression. Read the compressor FAQ linked in my sig for more info.
