Very easy - the manual is helpful.
Nutshell version:

have the left knob (the mode selector) set on "loop" (6:00 position)
tap on the left footswitch to start recording
Play a bassline or riff
tap on the second-to-left footswitch to stop recording and start playback
Play over what you looped.

It may take you a few tries to get used to tapping the switch at the right start and stop points for your loop, but once you get the hang of it, the DL4 is easy to use to create smooth loops.

If you want to add a second (or more) parts, tap the left swtich again to record, and the second-to-left again to stop recording and continue playback.

You can download the manual from the Line6 site (I bought mine used too).
Get the DL4 manual and the "Stompbox Pilot's Handbook" and you'll be good to go.
Have fun!
