Looking for opinions on reverb pedals...
Looking for feedback and opinions on reverb pedals. Looking for a pedal that can do both the dirty "back-of-the-room" blues reverb sound, and the cavernous bass tone from The Cure's "Disintegration" album. I just got TC's Hall of Fame. Not sure if I like it or not yet. Also looking at Iron Ether's Nimbus, and Source Audio's Soundblox 2 Dimension Reverb. Any help always appreciated!
I'm a HUGE reverb fan and to me the most versatile is an EHX Cathedral. Has spring, accutronics (6-spring verb), room, hall, plate, reverse, flerb (verb with flanger in the verb only) and even a dedicated echo mode with a echo/verb mix. Also it has tap tempo, a huge range of tone and damping, pre-delay of up to 2 sec, and infinite reverb on a footswitch or by putting the verb time knob all the way up. Can get very clean, can be dirty but not too much. Plus you can save 1 preset per mode (8 presets!)
I also got it with the tap tempo modded with a soft switch (really easy to do). It really makes it accurate and it also has a extra jack for a latching footswitch for the infinite (in essence a EHX Freeze)
I actually like it so much its currently getting re-housed and etched.
Best verb ever!
I also own a Roland RE-20 Space Echo (has a Z-Spring reverb: very select type of verb that you either love or hate.
And a MSLP cave reverb with damp and verb size controls. Gets really warm and cave like.
I personally do not like TC Electronic stuff. It just sounds too prestine, cold, with no personality. Not that I do not like digital stuff, I prefer digital over analog (gasp). I would reccomend EHX or Boss for reverb...
But try all your options out first. One man's treasure is another man's junk.
The Nimbus is very versatile for bass, although I never cared for the voicing of it. Currently I use a Neunaber Stereo WET which sounds phenomenal and can be used as a delay or chorus with via the Pedal Customizer software made by Neunaber and a dummy plug.
It will do the deep, cavernous reverb, but I don't think you'll get much dirty reverb out of it. Not unless you throw some dirt into it, and it takes dirt like a champ.
I'll have to check out the EHX Cathedral. The only thing about EHX pedals that always gets to me is the lack of headroom. I swear you can hear them top out when you hit them hard. The thing I do not like about the Cathedral, right off the bat, is the large size of it. My Pedaltrain PT1 is rather full as it is, so space is a premium right now.
The Neunaber WET pedal seems great, but it has a buffered out, which is what I am trying to avoid. Thank you, though.
