Loud "disconnect" type buzz on George L cables

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, I know this is a bonehead question...
but I'm a bonehead sometimes.

I just set up a George L cable for input into my amp.
When the cable moves slightly, a loud buzz (similar to a cable that is plugged into the amp being plugged into an instrument) happens. So this, it seems, is a shoddy connection, and I need to fix it...

Is there a good way to test the cable when I redo it, so I don't find this out with gear plugged in and ready?

I do have a multimeter around, not very good with it but with some adult supervision I can manage

Thanks for any tips. I like the cables as far as their simplicity goes, just want to have the connections nice and solid.

I love George L cables, but I do find it necessary to use a cable tester every time I assemble one, to ensure that the connection is good. The continuity tester function on your multimeter will do basically the same thing- you want to ensure continuity from the tip of one plug to the tip of the other, and from the sleeve of one to the sleeve of the other, but NOT from either tip to either sleeve. Wiggle the plugs while you test, in case there is an intermittent connection.

It's all about screwing down the set screw just the right amount- it has to screw in enough to cut through the outer jacket to solidly contact the layer of wrapped wire shielding, but not all the way through that layer down into the center core wire.
