loud hum from pedals

Sign in to disble this ad
Right so my set up is this

Fender J -> Boss TU3 -> Boss LS2 set to A+B Mix
Chain A: EHX Bass Big Muff -> EHX Enigma
Chain B: Digitech Bass synth wah -> Boss OS2
then to amp.

The Muff and OS2 work fine when they're isolated in the setup, as in Bass -> muff -> amp, without any hum. Little bit of hiss at high gains but whatever.

It's only when they;re in the full chain that they produce really loud hum.

All the pedals are daisy-chained from the TU-3, and the supply has a rating of 600mA, so I'm no where near the limit, and the Enigma has its own supply.

Any idea what the hum is being caused by? Possible LS2 problem?

The power supply will power everything fine with no hum when the LS-2 isn;t in the chain, it'll even power the enigma through daisy chain with zero hum.

Any suggestions?

Right, doesn't matter.
Some pedals are more sensitive to bad power supplies.

For example, I can use almost any pedal with a cheap-o power supply, but plug in a Boss Chorus? No go! Noisy as hell.

Try plugging in ONLY the LS-2 and see what happens.

Spend $20 on a OneSpot. Cheap, and it works like a charm.

Okay I tried the LS-2 on its own, I had two patch cables connecting the send/return inputs on it as to properly test the gain knobs.

The result? The hum is there, but I have to go to about half way for it to be really noticible, and it's very loud at full gain on both the A and B knobs, however its slightly louder when B is at full than when A is at full.

If it's there with the LS-2, and not without, then the "problem" is the LS-2. Really, the problem is probably just a crappy power supply then.
Like I said, I've been able to get away with generic/cheap power supplies with most pedals, but not with specific Boss pedals.
OneSpot.
:-)

It really does sound like your LS-2 has gone bad. FTR, it is possible to have hum/noise/interference problems with the 1Spot or ANY daisy-chain supply, so they are not a solution to hum/noise problems in general. But first it sounds like you need to replace the broken LS-2.

For the record I tried powering the LS-2 on its own, with a 9v battery instead of power supply. Still have the hum.
