making a pedal. plz check

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, im planning on making my own pedal, it has to have the following req:

A-B switch
bypass
tuner output (connection for an external tuning device)

i play an active bass. does this have any influences on how to build it?

this is the plan how to build

*the boxes with "O" are the switches. the oval shaped things are jackplugs inputs
Is this going to work?
and if i want to use LED-lights to indicate what switch is on, i need a seperate power input or a battery or something?

Waiting for any usefull respons,

Rijn

In order to use LED's you will need a power source (battery or wall plug). I like the logic of your switching layout, but I'm not sure a simple switch as shown will be sufficient. I suspect there would be a very loud "pop" through your speakers any time you step on one of those switches. An active bass won't change the requirements unless you want to switch back and forth between active and passive basses; then maybe you'd want to include some adjustment to bring them to the same level just so you don't have to re-adjust the settings on your pedals and amp every time.

FIRST! thnq for the reply

the "pop", i was hoping this wasnt going to be an issue. As i said, i never made a pedal earlyer, ever. So, how do the "real pedal makers" solve these problems? I was hoping to find a store somewhere where they sell footswitches that are used by mxr and such, put em in and be "done" with that part of the job

Ill only be playing active bass for the next few years so adjustments wont be nescesairry i guess

9 volt battery will do i guess, as long as it doesnt drain when plugged in its all fine with me.

other question, when i switch from A to B and have pedals in use on track A, those pedals dont modify my sound, right? [since all the wires will be placed on 1 jack-out and thus, are contacted with the pedals from track A]

Im not such a good electrician, hence the dumb questions... :P

anyways, again thnq for the reply!

If me last 2 questions are answered... ill start ordering the components right away!

now i only need a really reall REALLY cool name for it! :P

If you don't want the battery to drain with the pedal plugged in then you'll need to install an on-off switch from the battery connection.

The switches used by MXR/etc. are not just switches, they are connected to a portion of the circuitboard which includes a chip that handles the audio switching. So the best results come from either a 3PDT "true bypass" switch (which is what most "boutique" pedal builders use), that does not require any extra electronic switching chip; or from a chip and circuit that happen to be controlled by a simpler/cheaper mechanical switch.

I can help you out a bit.

First, do you want the the output to be muted when the tuner is on?

You can use a stereo jack to disconnect the battery when the instrument cable is unplugged.

It appears that you want to be able to select the following configurations:

1. Bass only
2. Bass with loop A
3. Bass with loop B

Is that right?

To help get rid of pop, you can solder a large resistor, like 1 Meg or higher, from the signal pin of the jack to the ground pin of the jack. It works pretty well, but there are better and more labor intensive methods as well.
