Malekko 616 vs Carbon Copy?

Sign in to disble this ad
Now that a little time has passed, and the 616 distorting debacle has been remedied, has anyone had a chance to compare these two? I am very curious as to which people prefer and why! I am really curious as to the comparisons/contrasts of the modulations. I have the 616 and like it quite a bit. But never having tried a CC, I am left wondering?
Thanks in advance your input.

Wow! No one has compared these? I figured at least Chronicle would have chimed in since he started a thread on this very topic and then never posted his results! I am aware he went through the distorted phase like several of us did, including myself..and I didn't even get the free t-shirt like he did in return!

I'm still holding out for the Red Witch Titan (or possibly a T-Rex Replica... and I'll eventually get around to a Way Huge Aqua Puss), but you know me... I'm a freakin' Tone Chaser and more knobs = WEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! in my book.

I'm kind of surprised nobody has chimed in, since the 616 (and the Memory Boy/Toy) was supposed to be a Carbon Copy killer.

I'm convinced that the 616 is cursed. After the first batch, which was slightly botched, I haven't seen them for sale anywhere since.

tumbleweeds...tumbleweeds...tumbleweeds...

Anyways, I got the original 616, sent it back for therapy, and WOW!
I really, really like it alot! Like I said, I just never tried the CC, and am REALLY curious how they compare.
The modulation section on the 616 is really radical and extreme, you can't really crank it much at all without just getting insane!
My research seems to show that the CC mod section is much more subtle. So I'm wondering if that is a good thing or bad?
And obviously I would like to know how the basic delays themselves compare!
C'mon...somebody throw this poor dog a bone!

60/hrs a week at GC will be your Talkbass and GAS killer.

So I thought i upload a 616vsCC clip in my 616 review.

Basically, the difference is that the Carbon copy has a very basic warm tone to it. Sure, it sounds great but it's very original.

The 616 has two sounds. Dark and Bright. TBP/Buffer bypass switching lets you choose which one. The Bright sounds more like the Carbon Copy but a bit brighter than it. The Dark sounds are on the verge of muddy but sounds nice for those dark licks.

I'm not a fan of the modulation of either. They both need to be on minimal depth/speed to sound nice. After that, it's just silly.

If you already have the 616, stick with it. The modulation on the CC will sound almost the same on the minimal settings like the 616 but has a less radical sound when cranked...but it still doesn't sound very good.

For modulated delays, the echobox is still #1 in the delay world.

yeah, after all the delay's i've tried- the echobox is still the coolest sounding. It also sounds great with other effects which is the big bonus.

I haven't tried the Malekko 616 yet, but the clips sound amazing. I have a RetroSonic Analog Delay right now, and owned the latest version of the Carbon Copy, which I returned a few days later. The CC was just murky sounding to me, and it screwed with my clean guitar tone, and kind of gave it a dull edge. I hated it.

The RetroSonic sounds incredible whether I am playing my guitar or bass into it! Great stuff, but I am also looking forward to trying the 616, well, just because!
