it has reverb "tails" which is nice, but it mean's its not true bypass. Not an issue, as its usually a good idea to have a nice buffer last in line.
Is it still a "spring" emulator though?

Boasting a super small size, less noise, and the super awesome "dwell" mod previously available as an option on the original Spring Chicken, this tiny reverb sounds HUGE! BUH-KAW!! All the great sound of a giant reverb tank in a small little pedal! | ^^^ Spring emulator. |

But I think spring just isn't my thing. I keep hoping someone will put out a non-spring reverb that isn't DSP.

Reverb comes from either large resonating materials (plates, halls, springs) or DSP imitations of those things. You could argue that an analog delay can be made to sound like a reverb, but there are plenty of analog delay pedals out there, so clearly that isn't what you've been looking for. |

The Belton Brick was a clever implementation of PT2399 digital delays to emulate the spring echo/reverb. My opinion of sound aside, I believe the PT2399 works much like an analog delay does with faster sampling rate. You can even configure it tonally to resemble a BBD with the right filtering. A single delay pedal can do slapback at best, depending on how fine the lower delay range is, but the Belton was using 2-4 SMD PT's for its sound, I believe.
The designer of the Belton Brick has moved on and implemented a much better sounding reverb using DSP. It's called the "Wet" Pedal. Still a spring-emulation, but it's capable of much more.
I think if you can design a series of PT's to emulate the distinct echoes in a spring reverb, it shouldn't be that hard to configure it to smear the sound a bit more like a plate verb, or simple ambience. This is better suited for Acoustic guitar in my opinion, and some might even prefer it for bass. I think this is how the Tech21 Boost RVB works. I don't believe its DSP but you can easily get lots of sounds other than Spring. I should take a stab at this after I jump into the PT2399 game.
It seems like Malekko has come up with a better way to do the Spring thing without the Brick, which lets you have more control over the circuit, giving you access to things that were internal to the Brick. The fact that it does trails is pretty awesome too!

I guess this is his answer to all the bashing of the Spring Chicken in some regards since that was rather slapped together. I'm looking forward to a gut shot. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
