Mark Hoppus Tone???

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm IN LOVE with Mark Hoppus's tone from his Blink 182 days.

A great example of the sound I'm talking about is their 2000 private show in San Diego. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=yYxq-r77Y1o)

Does anyone know what settings i need to get this tone?

I'm using a 1998 Fender Jazz and a KUSTOM PA system, the exact model I'm not sure of. There is no bass input on said PA so its just through one of the regular inputs.

a rough guess from what i hear would be turn the treble up add a tiny bit of mid and play fairly hard with a hard pick

but its just a guess i aint a blink fan n play with fingers

I honestly don't understand how anyone could be "in love with" that so-called "tone". You can't even hear him except when the guitarist stops playing. It's just plain P bass through an average PA with nothing at all helping it tone-wise. If you have a PA amp you're already there. Maybe scoop your mids a bit so that you can't be heard in the mix, just like in that video clip. Oh yeah, and play with a pick.

Forget it I just looked at the clip and you don't even need the ampeg for that. But a Sansamp probably wouldn't hurt you.

i think the main key to that "tone" its play hard with a heavy pick

and is it just me or does his tone sound "empty"

I'm not a fan of the band, but I thought maybe the problem was just that it was a live clip. But here's the video with the album track, where it's still buried in the mix.

But to answer the OP's question, it's his custom Fender (a Jazz Bass body with an SD P-bass pickup and neck) played with a pick through an Ampeg and EQ'd to be bass heavy, mid scooped and light on the treble. Personally I think it's like a muffled version of Mike Dirnt's tone.

This might just be me, but to get his tone you need a p bass with the tone knob on full, dunlop tortex .60 picks, and keep the eq pretty much flat.

Well, that was unimpressive.

...with the exception that I recognized the venue and have played that very stage.

Perhaps this will impress you:

"They call me the Rhymenoceros
Not because I'm fat, not
'cause I got birds on my back
but because I'm horny, I'm HORNY"

Then on our next date
Well, you could bring your roommate
I don't know if Stu is keen to
But if you want we could double-team you

How about you
And two dudes?
Him, you and Stu
In the nude
Being lewd with two dudes with food
Well, that's if Stu's into it, too

All you need for the Mark Hoppus tone is a P Bass with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder Pickups and roundwounds (newer is better with regards to the strings) , then boost the treble a little

Aside from that, and not to go too far off topic, but Tom Delonge shot have been fired from the band there and then for the way he handled his broken string. Totally un-professional IMO.
